Can anyone shed some light on whether a student who defers admission to a school (School A) yet accepts an offer from another school (School B) risks either their acceptance to School B or their financial aid situation? Any insights appreciated.

Not sure what you mean here by “defer”. The team usually refers to a student being deferred from an ED choice. It’s like being waitlisted, but only used for Early Decision.

I think you meant: What if you’re on the waitlist for one, and accepted at another. Then what? Definitely go with school B and pay the deposit to hold a spot. If, later, that student is offered a position at School A (usually after May 15th), then the student can accept that offer, pay their deposit, and notify School B that you are withdrawing. That deposit to school B will be lost.

Why do this? Because there is no sure bet you’ll get off the waiting list at school A.

Thanks for the response. I think this may be more focused to my child’s area of study so will post there as well.

Do you mean if a kid is waitlisted at one school and accepts another? That has absolutely no bearing on getting off the waitlist, as schools cannot accept kids off the waitlist until after May 1, when they know how many kids are accepting admission, and your DS/DD has to let a school that has accepted him know by that point. In short, students are expected to accept other offers of admission if they are waitlisted. If they are taken off the waitlist and your kid decides he wants to go there, you’ll lose your deposit at the other school.

If you mean defer admission for a year, this is a policy that does not allow a student to attend a credit-granting institution during his/her year off. Usually, this “gap year” is used to travel or work.
