Deferring admission to UC Berkeley and applying to other schools

I applied to UC Berkeley for fall 2021 and was accepted. I was granted a full scholarship to study abroad for an academic year (2021-2022). It would be silly of me not to go, so I requested a deferment from UC Berkeley. My request was approved, however, they said I would need to reapply to the university but told me I was guaranteed the admission for Fall 2022 (once I come back from my year abroad). Now that I have some time on my hands, I would love to apply to Harvard and Stanford, two schools I didn’t have the chance to last year. Does anyone know if this is allowed? I can’t find any policies on UC Berkeley’s website about deferments. Thanks in advance.

@Gumbymom ?

I cannot find any information about the UCB deferral being binding, meaning you cannot apply to other schools for next year. I find it strange that they are requiring you to reapply so to me this says it is not binding, however I would contact UCB admissions to confirm.

I do know of a UC Davis deferral that was allowed to cancel their deferment and apply to other schools the following year.

Sorry I could not be more help.
