Deferring admission

I recently got accepted off the waiting list and wanted to know if it was possible to accept a place at DUkE, but to enroll in Fall 2009 not 2008. I really hope I can do this.

Yeah, you should be able to. One of my best friends on campus deferred to do a foreign exchange program. Just contact the admissions office and explain to them your reasons for doing so, and as long as you have a viable reason it shouldn't be a problem.

Ok thanks for the information. Anyone know of reasons which would be considered acceptable or which you know have let others defer admission? Thanks in advance.

I'd imagine just about anything except sitting around doing nothing. If you tell Duke you just need to "take a break" from school they'll probably be a bit skeptical, but if you're doing say, a foreign exchange program, interning somewhere, or volunteering abroad, things of that nature it shouldn't be a problem. If it is also for personal, family reasons I am sure they wouldn't mind either.
