Deferring Admission

Ok, I’ve got a question for everyone that I haven’t seen addressed anywhere. I applied to grad school for admission in Fall 2009. The programs I applied to were for terminal master’s degrees. I mostly got rejected, but received one unfunded offer of admission to a decent, but very expensive school. Thinking that I’d try to apply again to programs that were higher ranked and hope to receive some funding, I asked for, and received, a deferral till Fall 2010. Now however, I’m receiving email from the program I deferred congratulating me on accepting their admission offer. This wasn’t my intention. I wanted to keep the deferred offer of admission as a fail safe, provided that nothing better worked out when I reapply. Does anyone know if this is typical? I’ve scoured the university in question’s Web site and they don’t say anything about deferrals constituting an acceptance of an offer.

You’re going to have to call the program office (there’s likely a phone number in that congratulations email) with your deferral documentation in hand and talk to someone. Odds are good you’ll end up explaining your situation 2 or 3 times until you get the right person on the line.

Once you get the right person on the line, get their physical address and send a physical letter confirming your conversation and your deferral and ask that it be put in your file. (Let them know you’re sending it of course.) Ask if you need to contact the university and/or graduate school as well.

You can’t rely on email for this sort of thing. Be patient - it shouldn’t be a problem, but it may be a little time consuming.

What university is this? :D
