Deferring enrollment for one year (transfer student)

I’m a recent transfer admit to Brown for fall. I’ve sent back the commitment card and have every intention of attending Brown. When I should attend, however, is another matter. Several factors have encouraged me to consider deferring my enrollment for one year. (I can PM anyone who wants to know, but they’re just a little personal so I’m not posting here). I have a few questions about deferring.

1) Will Brown let me defer? The website says:

Thankfully, I wasn’t admitted from the waiting list so that isn’t an issue. But I wonder, can Brown declare my reasons not good enough? Or are deferrals only ever denied for technical reasons?

2) If I defer, can I stay a student at my current institution? I already have an associate’s degree (I’m transferring from a CC), so I don’t intend to get another diploma or use any credits I earn during the length of the deferral as transfer credit to Brown. I just want to take a few classes I couldn’t fit in while I was a degree seeking student. Yes, I’m a nerd haha.

I know the best place to look for answers is the admissions office. I agree. I’ve emailed them but I’m assuming the office is closed until Tuesday. I came here to see if you guys can give me any idea of what I should expect to hear back. Thanks in advance!

Hey, I don’t see a reason why they will not approve your reason of deferring. As long as you are not planning to transfer the credits that you take during the time of deferring, you should be fine. Brown’s curriculum is flexible, they should definitely approve it.

Thanks for the input! I hope you’re right!

For future reference, Brown doesn’t let transfers defer enrollment. I didn’t make an official request because admissions told me I couldn’t. It kind of sucks… Now I don’t know what I’m going to do. I really needed the time off :/

Sounds like you are going to have to commit or not. I can understand Brown not allowing deferment since transfers are counted in adjustment of class size, and that would just make calculations too messy. One possibility might be sucking it up for the first semester and then asking to take a semester off? (once you are already finishing the first semester? not because of academic problems hopefully though.)
I wonder if you contacted another student who was admitted as a second semester transfer (Spring) in the same intended major optimally and got a swap agreement, would admissions agree to that?? Just a thought (for which admissions would probably wish I kept to myself but why not?)

Great ideas! I’ve sent a second email regarding a deferral to a different, probably more appropriate admissions rep more fully detailing my reasons for requesting a deferral. If I get bad news again, I’ll try seeking out a spring transfer to swap with :)
