I'm having trouble finding any information about the possibility of deferring enrollment at Chicago to take a gap year. Is anyone aware of a posted policy about it or an FAQ where it's mentioned? Or have you done/researched it? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hmmm. I remember this came up at one of the information sessions during the Open House this past Friday. They said something about putting your request in writing (after being accepted, of course) and explaining why you want the gap year...what your plans are...and then they make decisions on an individual basis. I got the impression that if you are going to do something worthwhile with your time, it wouldn't be that big of a deal. That said, I'd definitely call the admissions office to get a more reliable answer than what I can sort of remember!

Thank you- I was getting paranoid that they discouraged taking a gap year or something, because I couldn't find anything about it or anyone who had done it. (As opposed to most of the Ivies, where the information is everywhere and it seems like a lot of people do it.)

Once you've accepted Chicago, you'll get a nice note from Ted O'Neill telling you that they approve deferments for almost all reasons other than matriculating at another college or university.

Oh excellent. I shall do that immediately.

After deferring a year of admissions, are you allowed to apply to other colleges and reject the deferred college should you get accepted else where?

seadog - you certainly may. i don’t know if it’s not allowed, but they never addressed it in the letter they sent me.

you actually get a letter at the end of winter asking to reconfirm your enrollment.
