deferring from Cornell

I finally got my deferment until fall 2007 confirmed and I thought I should let people know how I did it, since they don't make it obvious and it took me many tries before they did anything about it. This is school specific, so if you aren't in arts and sciences then you're on your own other then you have to get in touch with your specific school and not the university admissions office.

Basically, what it comes down to is you have you write a letter to Dean DeVries (<a href="http://www.cornell.edu/search/?tab=people&netid=dd75%5B/url%5D">http://www.cornell.edu/search/?tab=people&netid=dd75</a>) explaining what you plan to do in your year off and it can't be taking college courses somewhere else or just sitting around doing nothing all year. If you actually want the letter to be dealt with, you need to send it to Dean DeVries' secretary (dsm2@cornell.edu), but still address it to Dean DeVries. I sent mine via email, but you can also mail it or fax it. You should get a confimation letter in the mail within the next month or so. If you don't get one then call the Arts and Scinces admissions office (607-255-4833) and ask them to confirm and if they can't confirm it ask them what to do from there.

If you were accepted ED and you want to defer, you probably should have done it already. I'd guess that they'll still accept your request, but by waiting you are effectively putting one more person through the trauma of the waitlist unnecessarily. RDers obviously still have time.

I hope this helps.

so... what are you gonna do during the year? What to most people who defer (sp?) their admissions?

I'm going abroad for religious study. I think a lot of people just travel and a lot get jobs to help pay their way through college.

Ooh are you doing one of those Israel schools for the year off? I have a bunch of orthodox friends that are doing that (sorry if I'm prying, you don't have to answer if it's TMI).

yeah that's what I'm doing. That was a huge jump from the amount of info I gave though. I never even mentioned I was jewish. How did you guess that?
