hey CC-Berkley threadreaders!
do you guys know of anyone who had deferred their applications? I am hoping to go to Hong Kong University of Science and Technology for a year for several reasons
1. to learn conversational chinese
2. to get a feel of Hong Kong
3. to learn about my heritage
4. to get more financial aid from Berkeley. the thing is, if everyhting goes as planned, i'm going to get permanent residency in 2012, and if i start freshman year later, then i can cut off a large portion of my tuition...

i'm worried about the whole process. is it easy to defer ur application? do they ever change their decisions on your admittance in that year's time? @@

Hmm you need some good appeal reasoning essay.

If you are enrolled at another university, you might have to re-apply as a transfer. You need to be very careful with this one!

There is a process to basically enroll at Cal and then withdraw - you are then eligible to simply apply for readmission. If you don’t enroll, you will be applying again but as a transfer student.

From the registrar’s website:

Notice to New Undergraduates
If you are a new undergraduate student and wish to return to Berkeley in a future semester, it may be beneficial for you to wait until the beginning of instruction and withdraw instead of cancel. If you cancel your registration, you will be required to submit a new admission application to attend a future semester; if you withdraw, you only need to apply for readmission, which is a much simpler procedure. Note that you need to be officially registered (enrolled in at least one class, registration fees paid, and no blocks) in order to withdraw.

hm… unless reason #4 is a huge reason (whichit might be), I think the safer route is to go to Cal and then do study abroad at HKUST for a year junior/senior year. (you mgiht even be able to sneak it in sophomore year if you can convince the study abroad department)
