I will be taking out student loans to attend the school of my choice for my undergraduate education. I have found many loans that allow me to defer payment until "Graduation" but it is not clear what this means.

I am planning on attending graduate school for a doctoral degree and want to know if there are any loans I can defer until I get out of graduate school. I am not worried about loans for graduate school.

I need to take out somewher around 40k in loans for undergraduate, so although I will do the unsubsidized stafford loans, they will not pay for the entire education.

Well, there is "in school deferment"-as long as you are enrolled half time at University you do not have to pay your loans. So, I reckon you could go to University year round (until you are done with schooling) in order to temporarily circumvent paying your student loans.

You need to call the holder of your student loans and ask them exactly what it is you can ethically do in order to defer your student loan payments, because rules vary. Some loans have a six month grace period. Some loans have income sensitive payment plans and so on.

What loans does this apply to?

Well lizzard, normally it applies to the stafford. You have to read the promissory note(s) of your student loan(s) and call the student loan holder to make sure you will be alright attempting to defer your loans.

If you defer payment until graduation, depending on rather or not there are interest rat es and if they are high, chances are you will be paying off the loans until your late thirties. However, depending on your ability to save-and-gain money, you might be able to reserve enough to pay off lump sums as soon as you graduate, however thats not an easy task, especially if you do not plan on working.

Even during a period of deferment (like while attending graduate school), interest will continue to accrue on the loans you are deferring. That money does add up.

Agreed!
Any student that is in school at least 1/2 time qualifies for in-school deferment.
ALL STAFFORD LOANS follow this rule, it isn't different from one lender to the next. This is federally guidelined.

While in school no payments are required, and you have a 6-month grace period (where no interest is due on the subsidized portion), then if you decide to go back to school, let your lender know, and you will be eligible for In-School Deferment.
