Defferred from University of Michigan. Do I have a chance?

Stunash, with the switch to the common app Michigan has seen a 18-20% jump in the number of applications this year. The feeling around campus is that the high number of deferreds is related to this increase, i.e., Admissions sent out deferrals in order to buy themselves some time to more fully review all the applications. I have not heard of any server issues.

The link below shows that the average unweighted GPA for Michigan Engineering freshman is 3.9, my guess is yours is around 2.8. The average ACT is 31, so your 32 helps. Your rank of 490 out of 620 is just a killer. Explaining that your low GPA is due to a heavy Honors/AP course-load only hurts your case. College isn’t easier than high school AP, it’s harder. It’s true that deferred is not denied, but without some extenuating circumstances it’s difficult for me to be optimistic about your chances.
