Define: Hipster

So what, is this just a coverall term for 'people whom the user of the term does not like/believes him/herself superior to'?

I’ve seen this question posted in the College Life forum so, you might want to go check there.

Anyway, according to urban dictionary a hipster is one that:

pretentious psyudo-artistic types. they shop mainly at stores like urban outfitters where they pay 60 dollars for a shirt that could have been purchased at the salvation army. sometimes they do go to the SA to prove how much an individual they are. likely to major in art history or something of that nature because they like the idea of art school but have no actual talent. Probably own a lomo camera and refer to the pictures they take as “my art” or “my photography.” they are experts on judging others. they actively pursue being a smoker and some think coke is a good idea. generally fairly wealthy. refuse to like any music that is popular, even if it is not technically mainstream popular. prides themselves on being indie.

most easily found: LA, brooklyn, around art schools.

Hahaha, oh wow, that’s awesome
I don’t know any hipsters if that’s the definition, but that’s probably just because I’m from a hick town. They sound fun to punch.

Hipsters around here would never drink that. I live on the Eastside of town and we think of Westsiders as backwards, so we say they drink PBR while watching the Reds and probably shouting things in German.

But UO is huge with the hipsters. I hate going there and seeing all the non-dancers who buy leg warmers. You don’t look like a dancer, you just look stupid.

My friend is a hipster.

You guys forgot fixed-gear bicycles! Hipsters already ride fixed gears, because they just ride better than any other bikes?

And often, their fixed gears are extremely tricked out and they have the messenger bag and everything, though they only ride on weekend social rides.

Here’s a really good representation of them http://nymag.com/images/2/daily/intel/07/09/06_misshapes_lg.jpg

I think that this is a better representation: http://www.scene-hair.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/scene-kids-hair-330x440.jpg

syn: scene kid

Nah, mine shows men too

ah, mulberrypie, it is delightful that you have conjured such a topic: scenesters are slightly different.

ah, really? do elaborate.

Indeed, I shall. The “scene” kid tends to wear darker clothing and more eyeliner. They are in a sense a soft blend of an emo kid and a hipster. They usually live in small towns and suburbs, whereas the hipster is in an urban area. Consult urbandictionary for more detail.

mulberry, did you just mix up scene kids with hipsters!?!?! Dear God.

Hipsters: Urban-dwellers, yuppies, often in their low-to-mid-20s, love all things “organic”, shop at local shops, wear ironic t’s
Scenesters: Suburb-dwellers, often teenagers, love all things “Hot Topic”, shop exclusively at the mall, often dress similar.

They’re polar opposites!

ahhh, all this terminology. where do the emo kids and indie kids fit??

a weak ******bag who tries to act tough.

Emo is a more gothic version of scene. They are more in touch with their “feelings” and like to be sad. Indie is not really a type of kid. This label is more applicable to films, music, and the like.

I’ve appearntly been called a hispter

and according to the definition I only fit in with the wearing a T shirt, skiny jeans, and a scarf.

ok
