It obviously stands for Underrepresented Minority, but what groups would you put in this category?

Um you can look at it statistically…

Which minorities have a lower percentage in top college demographics than national demographics?

URM= me.

umad?

URM=

-native americans
-Latinos & Hispanics
-African Americans

ORM= South Asians & East Asians.

[in college admissions].

I wish I was a URM, but sadly I am an ORM
=/

Is being an ORM better than being a white guy? :p

^ lol weird. i was just thinking about the exactly same thing.

it INCLUDES BLACK. not every black person is necessarily african american. my parents are from the caribbean. it gets really annoying when people soley say african american. sorry it’s a pet peeve of mine.

Pacific Islands are included some of the time, but not all of the time.

URM= person of an ethnicity, demographic, or area not very well represented or not overly represented in the applicant pool or in the school. Examples include people: from foreign nations not in Eastern Asia, from random islands, etc.

tokenadult made a whole thread to define who qualifies as URM, how ethnicity is determined etc in the college admissions forum. I’ll go search for it.

Edit: actually, I’m too lazy at the moment to go look for it. I’m sure you know what groups qualify for URM already.

Well, then why did I make this thread?

Search “Race in College Admissions FAQ” by tokenadult…I think it’s stickied in the Admissions forum.

To discuss what groups should qualify? As in, I think fish, people who don’t like chocolate or ice cream, or those don’t care about grades should qualify as URM for college admissions. Besides, everyone gave the proper definition of URM already. In addition to that, the thread I was referring to was merely giving the definition of URM (like two pages of definitions actually), which I’m sure you know already after reading other people’s posts.

mexicans, native americans, and blacks

countries like: Eastern Europe, Indonesia, Australia, Western Eaurope, random islands off the coast of S. America…

URM: Native Americans & Pacific Islander
Hispanic & Latino
Black, African American, & Caribbean

ORM (Over represented): White
Asian

So, is there any group just “represented?” Not over or under?

Caucasians are not ORMs seeing as they are not minorities lol.

Here is the thread:

^ that.

i wonder how Australian aboriginals must feel like when the fill out forms :/
