definitive answer: sat writing or no

hello,
there seems to be a lot of guessing and citing 3 year old sources for this question. my request is simple: does anyone know for sure whether or not MIT is considering the SAT writing section for class of 2012 admissions. if they are, are they using the essay or just the multiple choice.

danke

anyone?10char

i want them to place utmost importance on the writing section coz i got an 800 on it.
i think they will surely give some weightage

There have been repeated assertions on CC, in the Tech, and occasionally by an adcom that MIT does not take the SAT writing component into consideration. In practice, this is likely to mean a low score won't hurt, but an 800 is still an impressive accomplishment and will likely be noted. An MIT professor is supposedly the one who noted that the longer the timed essay, the better the score (after the first year, a couple of years ago). Little attention was paid, while grading, to proper puncuation and factual accuracy. There's a lot of debate about the value of a timed essay and I think Mr. Schmill's comments were that MIT is looking over the next few years to see if the scores correlate with actual school performance at MIT.

I really hope they DON'T look at writing. I scored the same on my essay in 12th grade that I did in 9th grade. It seemed like the better I scored on the multiple choice, the worse I scored on the essay. And I don't think being able to vomit out an essay in 25? mins is a good measure of anything...except maybe BSing skills or something (for most people at least).

There is no definitive answer. Last year they did not require it, because they did not know how to interpret it. I strongly suspect that they will have done a significant analysis of how last years admits writing scores correlate with their other data point. This year they are very clear:

We require the SAT Reasoning Test with the writing component or the ACT with the writing test.

This suggests to me that they are going to consider it, but I suspect that it will matter most when it is out of kilter with the other scores.

i dont know. SAT writing section used to be its own SAT II. so i guess it is possible (though MIT claims otherwise) that the admission officers do look at it as a possible SAT II reference. i mean, it does test your grammar and (not-so-important) timed-essay-writing skills.
hey, its never bad to get a 800 on it. :P
