Degraded from NYU to NYU Poly... What does that mean?

for2even, Jjohn is an RD candidate. If he gets accepted to Poly it probably means NYU referred him there and at the same time they are still considering him for admission

static75: I never heard anything from anyone there that they are getting rid of the CS program at Courant. It seems they might make separate concentrations like how CAS has two concentrations for Economics: Policy (easy and similar to other universities) and Theory (harder with more math).

It doesn’t make any sense because the two CS programs are so different. If you look at NYU Poly cs courses, they tend to be more practical (better for employment) but at Courant they are so mathematical and theoretical (better off if you getting a PhD or you like math). Take a look at the courses (not the introductory courses though) at cs.nyu.edu and NYU poly, and you will see the differences. Look at the homework in the NYU Courant CS pages. The homework looks terribly difficult and mathy.

Everyone may have been given NYU Poly maybe because they are better fit for NYU Poly unless you plan to get a PhD or you really like math. Anyway, trust me. NYU Poly is better off because it is more practical and actually helps you in a future job. I took a course at NYU Poly and it actually is USEFUL and less of a headache!!! On the negative side, NYU Poly students take classes in Brooklyn so it’s tougher to engage with the rest of the NYU community.

Plus, NYU Poly actually gives good scholarship. NYU doesn’t even give me anything to me at all!

To prove that I am a double major in math and CS, I have a CIMS e-mail address that proves I am a student at Courant. Only advanced undergraduate students get them. Just message me and we can talk through that.

i have a question…
u know they sent u a reply form, right?
if i filled that out,
am i obligated to get enrolled in Poly
or they r jus going to send my info to Poly,
and Poly would send me a package abt my scholarship??

and plus,
i dont think NYU would consider us as RD applicants =-="
im an ED applicant and they referred me to Poly as well
i really dont think they would review our applications again
when they hav a lot more to read…=-=“”

and let me tell u guys a little story…
Warren Buffett wanted to go to Harvard so bad
but he got rejected
but then, he realized that two professors that he admired were in Columbia
so he went there and learned a lot from them

“I’m 15 percent Fisher and 85 percent Benjamin Graham”

wat im trying to say is…guys, dont be frustrasted
there are always BETTER chances out there
the problem is…do u see them or not
i didnt really think abt wat i want to major in b4 i got rejected by NYU
but now…i realized that i dont really want to do Biochem
u guys shouldnt limit urself in NYU
unless…if u really want to do it
then u should start thinking how to get transfered to NYU

Hey everyone,

I’m a reporter from the Washington Square News, NYU’s paper, and we’re trying to find out more about what’s going on here. Basically, we want to know how you were informed of this decision, what exactly the letter said, if you had ever considered NYU Poly, and if you were considering it now, and if you knew that admission to Poly was even an option for admission. If you are interested in being featured in the article, please email your responses at: jordinrocchi@gmail.com. Thanks very much!

Best,

Jordin Rocchi

@centerklaus: I don’t know what the “reply form” said. If it’s from NYU-Poly and it says you’ve been accepted, this is the procedure: you don’t HAVE to go to Poly if you fill it out, but it does reserve your spot, temporarily. then they’ll wait for your tuition deposit which will really ascertain you have a spot at NYU-Poly…but even then, you don’t have to go. However, your deposit is nonrefundable. :(

If the reply form is from NYU, then I have no idea lol.

@karmic…I was actually accepted ED to Tisch…just browsing the board and decided to offer some insight.

could it be possible that this is a compliment. That NYU is loading up NYU-Poly with strong students since it is to become their only CS program?

indeed…very possible
since they are going to have a full integration,
I think they might want to place some strong students in Poly
to make it more competitive (there are many well-known schools around…Cooper , Rensselaer, etc.)
I might not be as well competitive as other people in Language and Extra-Activities
(i never had a part-time job)
but im really into Math…
I think thats the reason why they put me into Poly instead

if we helped Poly increase its fame,
we would be the “founding fathers” of Poly :D

Correction: “founding fathers and mothers” of Poly. In line with the earlier comments about women (and Poly). OK, I will stop being a pain now and go on with my own life for a little. :)

Have a good day everyone. I hope the good news keep rolling in.

@centerklaus

Poly used to be “engineering rivals” with caltech before its downward spiral in the mid 90s, it has its fair share of nobel prize laureates and inventions at the site, such as the Laser by the late Professor Gordon Gould. The mid-career alum are still amongst the highest paid individuals in the nation but its graduating talent has been sparse in the last 15 or so years

I’d be very surprised if this has anything to do with any sort of merging between NYU and NYU Poly’s CS departments. They’re both independent and very distinct entities – I’m an CS student at NYU (vanilla), and I rarely ever hear about anything going on at NYU Poly.

wait nyu’s going to get rid of comp sci department? then what happens to the current CAS comp sci majors?

Current CAS comp sci majors would obv continue their education in CAS, but all incoming compsci majors would go to Poly (hence all the compsci majors being sent to Poly this year)

i applied for comp sci in cas, and i got in.

The traditional 3-2 program between NYU and Stevens is now in the process of being replaced by a new 3-2 program between NYU and NYU Poly. So this means you will spend the first three years at NYU and your last two at NYU Poly.

And yes, there are several Comp Sci applicants who have been accepted directly into CAS.

Hi!..Just needed a small piece of information…Do MS Graduates from NYU Poly receive a degree from NYU? Or is it from NYU Poly. I’m asking because I heard NYU Poly is a college and not a university by itself and plus, a master’s degree from NYU would be great!

I know i am late, but i would also love to know the answer to the above qs.^^^

Any degrees earned at Poly after January 1, 2014 (the date of the official merger) will be granted by NYU.

Dang Modacke I am in the exact same situation as you. I applied to CAS with a declared major of computer science and I also applied to Poly, but due to Poly’s location and less than stellar reputation I would prefer to go to NYU CAS. Plus, if I am not 100% sure I wanted to major in comp sci for CAS I could always switch my major or get a liberal arts minor.

The thing is my grades are definitely good enough to get into CAS and I feel I would have got in with another declared major. In reality, I got waitlisted by CAS and have not heard back from Poly yet. Now I am kinda of relived that I also put consideration for Stern and other CAS majors so, I don’t get send to Poly.

It’s not that Poly is a bad school, it is just the location is not in the middle of city life like that Manhattan chapter. And really if you are going to NYU, you want the full experience the city and all, and Brooklyn is definitely not the city. Plus , I feel Poly has low standards ( just my observation) because all of my classmates(even the ones with less than Stellar Grades) who applied earlier in the year (DEC-JAN) got acceptances within 3 weeks.

I don’t know where you are getting your assumption from but Poly doesn’t have a less stellar reputation.^^ the school is pretty highly respected.

Poly’s campus is NYU’s Brooklyn campus which will turn into the next Washington square park. The NYU’s grad school (CUSP) is gonna open up there as well.

The reason why poly get their decisions earlier is because poly is the only NYU school at the moment that does rolling admissions. Next year it will change since it will officially be fully integrated into NYU. Also, Poly may be a bit easier to get in at the moment but VERY hard to get out of later. Also, it also depends on the applicant pool. If more people with very high stats apply, then they would take in many of the stellar applicants. Now, there will be more people with stellar grades applying so it shouldn’t be a problem.
