I understand that a student did find out on line today that they were accepted for admission. As it appears we are about to hear in greater intensity regarding acceptances I thought it might be helpful to current (and future) applicants for students who have been accepted to provide some data to those still waiting. So how about it?

Regular or Honors Admission

Did not apply for the Honors program.
Snail mail. ( I didn’t think we would hear from them so early!)
Do you think that not applying for the Honors program blew his chances for any scholarship?
No money, he will not attend.

Congrats to your son. You do not need to apply to the Honors Program to be awarded merit scholarship money. With your sons stats, at least based on past years, I would be very surprised if he wasn’t awarded merit money.

If your son’s UD portal also shows he is accepted you might try and go to his accepted students webpage and click on the Finance icon. Merit awards are listed here if they have been determined yet. With the new rolling admissions process I do not know if they have been determined yet. Perhaps they will be announced at a future time.

Thank you for that idea. It was on the financial aid page! He did get a scholarship $9000.00 / year University Scholar. There was nothing on the actual admission letter re: scholarship info. ( Now I feel like a bioch)

I don’t know if all the acceptances received so far have been from NY but I do know that every year when acceptances begin to be announced applicants start looking for some pattern to the release and usually nothing reliable can be identified. With the new rolling admissions process it would be my perspective that it just depends on how quickly an application was able to get thru the review process with so many factors involved that I suspect no specific pattern will be identifiable. Even if two applicants were identified as “application complete” on the same day this does not necessarily mean that they will be informed of a decision at exactly the same time. I do believe (no guarantee) that a lot more decisions will be coming out between now and the new year. You can find out about merit aid awards listed on an accepted students webpage (My Blue Hen) under the Finance/Financial aid link. Good luck to all applicants.

thanks.
Yes, we are from NY.
UDel will definitely be in the running. However, most of my son’s applications were regular decision, so we will wait to see what happens before we make any decisions.

Shellywelly, where did you find the scholarship info?

I am instate and was admitted to the honors program but I can’t find anything about finances on MyBlueHen home (other than that I need to fill out FAFSA).

I have actually taken classes (and am currently taking) at UD and thus also have a SIS account. My FinAid shows nothing on record. This makes me wonder if they haven’t uploaded because I haven’t submitted FAFSA. Did you apply for finaid?

Oh, and I’ll submit my “stats” I suppose.

Admitted to Honors Program Spanish/Poli Sci major
Instate

3.93 UW GPA, Rank 2/235
4.0 college GPA over 26 Credits (19 from UD)

SAT: 2150
SAT II’s: USH 760, Math II 730

VP of Class, President of NHS, Section leader in Marching/Concert/Jazz Band, etc.

Was notified on about the 21st of December via Snail Mail (found out about the day before on MyBlueHen Home).

You need to complete the FAFSA ASAP and identify UD as the receiving school. I do not believe any applicant (in-state or OOS) can be considered for financial aid from UD (merit or otherwise) until it is submitted. Congrats on your acceptance to the Honors Program.

My daughter has two friends who are currently freshmen at UDel. Both girls received merit aid and neither one submitted the FAFSA. I believe the FAFSA is only required for need based aid.

Thanks for correcting me on this. There is, however, a potential benefit to submitting the FAFSA even if ones/family income is high. Irregardless of income every applicant is eligible for a Federal Stafford Loan. If a family’s income is too high the loan would be unsubsidized but even so it would be a better deal than taking out a loan from just about any other source. Obviously if an applicant will not need loan money at all this would be a moot point. Again good luck to all applicants.

My D is sophomore, and we receive only merit scholarship (no need based aid), and were told we need to fill out the FAFSA every year to get the merit aid. If you are unsure, you should call the financial aid/admissions office. Don’t make the mistake of not filling out required forms.

^ that is interesting because that piece of information is not on the web site. Maybe they just changed the rules for the class of 2014? Thanks for the info- I will be sure to call before my daughter applies ( she is a junior).

I just looked at the web site and under merit scholarships it states that the only required information is the Common App. It says that no other information is required. I am glad that you mentioned this because now I need to call the school after the vacation to get this clarified.

My D is a Junior at UD and she received merit aid only (we did not apply for need based aid). We never filled out any forms nor were we required to. When she got accepted the merit info was located under the financial section of her login. We were not required to fill out FAFSA nor have we ever. There seems to be some difference of opnion on this so to be sure I would call the Financial Office.

amassmom I’m in the same boat as dogsrthebest. My D is a soph… only merit based $ I have never applied for Fafsa as we will not qualify. Never an issue with her getting her merit money. It’s always in her financial information when I pay her tuition.
