Delaware vs. UVA/VTech

So I am accepted to Delaware's Honor Program as an Engineering major and have a preferred walk on spot on their football team. I really love football, and think Delaware is such a good fit for me. My mom on the other handis really pushing for me to go to UVA or Virginia Tech. I really didn't like those schools as much as Delaware. I also didn't get into their Honors Programs, but they have better engineering programs. (FYI I am undecided as to which engineering field I will major in). Putting aside tuition, which do you think would be better?
I think graduating with an honors degree and being a varsity athlete looks pretty good, but my mom thinks that employers will be more likely to hire from UVA or VT. Your opinions are greatly appreciated. Thanks

I think you should be allowed to choose which college you prefer, unless you cannot afford your first choice and you can afford your other options.

While clearly Va. Tech is one of the premier engineering programs, I’m not so sure about that at UVa - not saying its not good, just that it is never mentioned in the same breath as MIT, Va Tech, Ga. Tech, RPI, CMU, etc. And Delaware is in the big leagues, as well (especially for chemical engineering). Employment opportunities will not be disadvantaged because of a degree from UD. That said, Mattmoosemom is right that you have to decide what you think is best for you - you have to want to go where you decide to go, regardless of how much someone else wants you to go elsewhere and no matter how much you want to please that someone else.

My D is also trying to decide between UD Honors engineering (the in-state bargain priced school) and somewhere else (Bucknell - her top choice but very expensive) although she won’t be playing football. (However, she does know Coach Keeler’s kids - they swam together for a few years.)

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I don’t care what the rankings say, for engineering, UD Honors is one of the best for jobs right out of school. You are surrounded by duPont, Gore, and others. I think it’s a really really good deal especially if you’re in honors.
