Delaworld

My daughter will be attending University of Delaware as a Freshman starting in the fall of 2009. She is very excited and so are we. I was wondering if anyone has any information about Delaworld 101 (freshman orientation?). Is it one day or more? Do the students stay over at the school? Are the parents involved or is it just for the students? Any information anyone has would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

It is a one-day thing. Parents go (at least, mine did) because they split up the parents and students. The parents sit through various presentations basically on “how to be a parent of a college student”. Students generally do not stay over at the school but I’m sure if you wanted they’d find a way for you to do so. They divide up the students based on majors (to an extent). So, when I went on Delaworld last summer I met many Mechanical Engineering majors and History majors. Since students also register for courses at Delaworld, they try to keep the same majors together to make things easier.

thank you so much for your response. My was also wondering when you get your roommate assignment. We are happy to read how happy you are at Delaware. My daughter was considering several schools in the beginning of her search and just fell in love with Delaware and never even considered pursuing the other schools

You will be given a date for Delaworld, you can’t request a date. However, if the date you are given is not good for you, you supposedly can request a change. As was already mentioned by BlueHen, there are activities for the students and parents. My husband and I found our meetings to be very informative. I remember being given a coupon for the University Bookstore. It is a good time to buy sweatshirts or other UD merchandise. Enjoy your day. It will be the start of an exciting time!

thank you so much! my daughter is so excited and can’t wait until the fall. We are actually here in Newark this weekend for the Delaware Decision Days, which was a great, informative program. Thanks again for the info!

I second Mattmoosemom - congratulations and welcome!
DD is a junior. I imagine there may have been some changes to Delaworld but it was a great day. The date we were given didn’t work for us as we are about 400 miles away. It was not a problem to switch to a more convenient date. An earlier date doesn’t seem to influence course selection. I don’t know if it is possible to have students stay over in a dorm as it is summer. We drove down the day before and stayed over that night. We enjoyed the parent activities which included a panel with students who were actually honest despite the presence of administrators. We all remember the free ice cream!
You will not receive your housing assignment until late in the summer. This is usually cause for a great deal of consternation for students who have friends who find out about their room mates much earlier. It may be later, but it’s still in plenty of time to make contact and work out some early details.
Feel free to ask any other questions you may have.

My son got a call yesterday saying that he had to attend Delaworld on July 7th, as that was the only day that his advisor would be there. If he went on another day, he would only be able to speak to a student. He’s in the HESC school, in the honors program, and I think they get a specific advisor.

^ If the schedule of events is like it was two years ago, the head of the Honors Program will have a session for parents of Honors Program students. I’d recommend attending that if you can.
