Delaworld

Did anyone not get a delaworld date yet?

I have been communicating with the Honors Delaworld staff and dates are going out this week for Honors students.

That makes sense since my D is also honors.

Yes, my son read on Facebook that the honors kids had not gotten their packages yet. My son is going July 7th, but we only know that because they called us a week ago to see if we could attend that day, because it was the only day that his advisor would be available. Since they get different advisors than the non-honors students I guess that wold make sense. There were a couple of other possible dates for him but he would see a graduate student instead.

Thanks, we were getting concerned that we had not gotten a date yet!

Got it today july 6th delaworld

For anyone who is planing to stay overnight for Delaworld, I was just able to book the Hilton Christiana for $39 on Priceline ($49 with fees, using Name Your Own price). It’s not as convenient as the University-run Courtyard (this is 12 minutes away) but it’s way cheaper. And it’s better than leaving at 5am to get there at 8.

My son got his DW paperwork, he is meeting with his advisor at 8:30 so we may actually be able to leave by early afternoon since it seems that much of the afternoon is spend waiting to meet with the advisor.

I did the same thing, but for $4 more, also the Hilton. I started at $40 and had to do a rebid at $43 to get it. We’re going tonight.

Did the advisor appointment time come in the package or they told you over the phone? I don’t recall seeing an exact time in the paperwork.

Apparently they set up the time when they called to confirm that he could attend on the 7th. If he did not go then he would have had to meet with a student instead. I think it was related to his being in the honors program and his particular major.

The Hilton appears to be a much nicer hotel than the 2* Fairfield Inn we stayed in with PL last time (which was more of a motel, with outside walkways, and it was literally right next to I-95). And I’m pretty sure you can just take the road it is on to the university. The only downside to the Hilton is you don’t get free breakfast. Not a big deal this time since they’re giving us breakfast at the university.

Be sure to tell us what you thought of it.

We’ve been pricelining since our first visit for Delaware Discovery Days in 2005 and have stayed at practically every hotel in the Priceline inventory at one time or another. The Hilton has varied between 2.5 and 3 stars and the Courtyard near the Hilton and Fairfield Inn has changed from 2.5 to 3. Interestingly, the UD Courtyard is 2.5 stars and is nicer than the one near the Hilton. The Fairfield does have rooms with indoor corridors on the top floor - you can ask to be put in one of those.

We’ve stayed at the Hilton multiple times. It’s an older property but definitely a 3 star. Nice rooms and amenities - typical of a Hilton. Tends to have lots of events (weddings etc) on weekends. They have a pond out front with swans and they having a feeding ceremony each evening. The pool is in a courtyard and is open in the summer only. It’s always a “discussion” between DH and me about which way is better to go - the “back” way or 95. It’s pretty close to the same timewise unless 95 is backed up.

Happy to answer any other questions.

That’s interesting that the UD Courtyard is on PL. I would obviously have been happy to stay there but not at their prices, which tend to be pretty high. We will probably stop by there the night before DW since they are supposed to have a hospitality suite. We’ve never been to that part of the campus.

We did have an inside corridor at the Fairfield, but our room faced right onto I-95. But overall it was much different than other FI’s we’d stayed at, and not in a good way. On the other hand,.my son and I were able to take a walk to Office Depot, Borders and Toys R Us after we got back from dinner.

Hope you went to Cheeseburger in Paradise - it’s DD’s favorite and she makes sure we go whenever we’re down.
I remember going to the hospitality suite - just a couple people there to answer questions, could have skipped it, but that was 3 years ago. Be sure to sign up for the VIP program at the UD Courtyard. You get some discounts at the hotel but there are also Main St. discounts and you get a couple free luggage tags. When I get the UD COurtyard, it’s usually in the mid $40’s on priceline.

Yeah, I already have the UD Courtyard VIP club (felt a little guilty that they spent $5+ mailing it to me)!. There was a coupon for this place on Main Street that we ate at last time.I also think we can get a discount at Cosi from being a fan on their Facebook page. The hospitality suite claimed they’d have restaurant discounts but I wonder if that is the same as in the VIP club? Hmmmm…

We have to get to the National 5 and 10 store on Main St. to check out their shirt selection.

Well I haven’t had much success pricelining for visiting weekend yet. So far I bid up to $44. I’ll keep trying…

We just spent the day at Delaworld.
-Wear a light sweater if you get cold easily. The rooms were cold.
-The parents spent the day in Trabant and the students went between Trabant and Gore Hall. -My son waited about 20 min. for his advisement meeting. He didn’t think that was a big deal.
-The WSFS bank had a line all day. Fill out your paperwork before you get there. We are going to go back tomorrow before the first session gets out and the bank gets busy.
-Lunch is chaos. The students finish a session at noon and the parents finish 10 min later. The family is given one card to pay for all lunches in the family so it is a pain if you are in different food lines. You either have to meet up or pass the card off.
_Arrange a meeting place with your student when they return to Trabant to meet with you. There were 250 students and their parents at the session today.

You can open the WSFS account in advance on the internet. Once the account is open, all you need to do is activate the atm (student id) card. My son was scheduled to get his ID card in the afternoon. Right after he got it, he went to the bank. There was only 1 person in line (it was about 2ish). Extra bank staff came out and he was helped within minutes.

Lunch was chaos. Since the students get there about 10 minutes before the parents, have your student pickup your lunch if possible, and get a table. Lunch information is provided at checkin so you can scope it out in advance. When the parents get there, the line is insane. I had told my son to get his lunch without me but didn’t think of having him get mine too. He was sitting and eating while I was on line waiting for my sandwich.

There are various info tables set up in Trabant that are worth checking out, particularly the ones about computer deals (apple and dell), transportation (schedules for public transportation to and from Wilmington for bus and train connections), financial aid, etc.

Deals for Apple computers are no different than what is offered on-line or in the store. You can show an acceptance letter at the Apple store to get the discount before Delaworld. We bought my son’s computer at the Apple store in Christiana mall to save on our state sales tax. We couldn’t get a printer because they didn’t have any in stock but we saved enough in taxes to make it worth our while to buy the computer anyway and get the printer from another source.

We opened bank acct. this morning. No lines. The young woman said they don’t get busy until about 11 am. She was very helpful. To me it was worth the extra trip to get questions answered rather than using on-line option to open the account.

Diny0, did you get the free itouch (with rebate) and 3 yr warranty? I remember when we purchased my daughter’s Macbook 2 years ago there was about a 10% discount for students and that was about the best you could do for an Apple. We also put the Macbook on our homeowner’s insurance for theft protection and purchased the 3 yr warranty (well worth it, she’s had battery problems and has been to the apple store on a few occasions).

Thank you all for the great info on Delaworld, etc. One question. How do you all know before you book the hotel on PL which hotel you will be getting (or do you only know after you book it). I just went on to that website and it looks like they will accept a very low (40ish) offer for a 3 star property but my only question would be how do you know where you will be staying. Thank you!

They tell you after you win, that’s how PL works. But so long as you bid the Newark zone, you’re going to be fairly convenient, and it’s obviously much cheaper than booking on your own. If you do 3* the odds are high that you will get the Hilton at the moment.

If you feel strongly about staying someplace very close to campus then PL is not for you.
