If admitted to Cal in April, I would like to stay at home another year for personal reasons.

Do UC's allow applicants to defer their admission onto the next year? Or do we have to apply again and go through the entire review process a second time (given that I don't add anything to my academic record during the extra year).

I don’t know how it is for transfers or at Cal, but I was admitted and sent my SIR to a UC campus as a freshman and couldn’t defer admission due to falling ill… I went to CC after missing a quarter which didn’t affect me because of my APs. In your case, I’m not quite certain, but I’m guessing the UCs generally don’t defer admission (I could be wrong though). Call Berkeley and ask, once you’re admitted.

Usually, you cannot defer your admission at UCs. However, my friend had to defer Berkeley’s admission last year (she had to defer a semester), so she simply enrolled herself into one class and dropped out by herself during the first week. That way, she will be able to reapply in the following semester without any penalties. This is one way if you really need to take off a semester, but you need to pay a certain percentage of the enrollment fee for that one class… And she was a transfer. Honestly, that’s all I heard and I don’t really know how exactly it works, so you should call Berkeley.
