Maybe some of you have noticed this, but I have posted this on the SAT portion of this site as well, but I feel obligated to know the chances of Collegeboard actually canceling my score. EST sent me a letter today saying that they might cancel my score because I used a mechanical pencil (of all things, why this?). I responded to them via email and went into servile position and basically apologized greatly and told them how even teachers, students, and proctors said mech. pencils were alright.
I was thinking that I might bug them enough by calling them tomorrow and complaining, begging, etc. So, CC, what do you think will happen? Chances into college depend on this because Oct. score was my best, and I'd go berserk if they denied me my score because of a mechanical pencil.

bump for justice

i always thought using a mech pencil would be okay as long as you used .5 #2 lead or something. I feel bad for you and hope everything works out well. By the way, it specifically says in the rules to not use a mechanical pencil so if a proctor said it was okay, then he/she was wrong. Email them and say you're sorry and that no one corrected you. Don't say friends said it was okay, say the proctor skipped that part or failed to mention it.

I understand why it was delayed, but cancelling my score because of mechanical pencils is just...wow. I used my previous SAT I and SAT II tests with mech pencils too and don't see how they found out this time.

Definitely call/badger/beg them...do whatever it takes--you shouldn't suffer because your proctor didn't do his/her job properly.

xkcd - A Webcomic - Scantron

Seemed appropriate.

Collegeboard is eviiiiiiiiil. Anyway, I would just beg, beg, beg. They totally effed you up, but right now they have the upper hand. I hope everything works out!

That's the most retarded rule over. I hope my PSAT's do not get affected by this.

The "When to Arrive on Test Day and What to Bring" page (page 8) in this year's SAT registration booklet says very clearly, "NO PENS OR MECHANICAL PENCILS." Reading the rules is important before you take the test.

tokenadult, students, teachers, and even the proctors that overlooked my test said it was totally fine to use mechanical pencils. I have used it in my last two ones, and half of the people that take the test use it as well, and I was the only suspect. So, if they cancel it, chances to over seven of my colleges will be far-far reaches rather than matches because of a pencil. But there is something wrong if anyone in their right mind supports this rule or the canceling of my score.

Wow, that is a really really crummy situation you're in. I absolutely feel for you-yes, it's in the rules, but I've had proctors read that part and then say "no, that is NOT true, they've updated their systems, go ahead and use mechanical". And I have! And I've never had any problems! And I don't understand how they know you did or why they care so freaking much. I suppose the only thing you CAN do is call/beg and such. But I feel for you, I really, really do. That majorly sucks.

Thanks Lilyrobin. and yet, it's hard to not assume the worst, considering that 3/4ths of my colleges depend on this score alone.
