Dell Computers????

how cheap are you looking for? there is a fine line between a bargain and a piece of crap that you should not cross.

many powerful and quality laptops can be had at around $900. if you want a less common size such as 13.3" or less, be prepared to spend a few hundred more for even less power.

ub-vinny your ranking is ridiculous. you can say "well ibm makes some really quality laptops but they also charge a hefty premium" and then make an educated decision not to buy one based on your needs. sony, who you put last, makes the best 11.1" laptops of anyone, well worth the sony premium in many cases.

I hate Dell. Bad customer support, and if you need to service the laptop cause something goes wrong, you may have to pay as much as you do for a new laptop! Dell has their own weird parts, and they even have a separate version for Windows XP OS! I have an Acer... and it's amazing. I suggest HP/Compaq, Acer, or Gateway based on personal experience. But I will never buy a Dell. :)

Laptops are a commodity product. Decide what you really need a laptop for , then shop around. All name brands are comparable.

As to the batteries, the Dell battery problem was actually a battery they sourced from Sony. Many other computer brands use the same battery, so are subject to to same problem.

If style is your key driver, get a mac. If price/performance is a priority, there are a ton of inexpensive Windows PC options.

I made that List from my own experience, Ive done computer repair work for ever 7 years in a public setting.

5.Apple.
6.Acer

In my experience, Acers don't even belong in the top TIER let alone the top 6. Acers are seriously the worst of the worst in workmanship, product design, and quality control. I speak from experience when I say that I have NEVER, EVER been more dissatisfied and frustrated with any consumer product that I have ever bought in the past 18 years of my life. Apple, however, belongs in the top 2-3. Apple represents the best of the best in quality control, workmanship, product design, packaging design, functionality, and all other aspects of the product.

I want the best overall total package in terms of quality, style, ease of use, workmanship, packaging design, and customer service, and I can safely say that I'm switching to mac.

I disagree. The laptop market is closer to a monopolistic competitor market than anything...and there ARE major differences between the different brands.

There's more to the Mac than just style. People constantly harp on the style issue as if it's the only thing going for the system. It's not.

The difference in OS alone differentiates the Mac a great deal from the average Wintel.

Man, all I can say is that I love the way my Dell E1405 looks... it's silver, nice and streamlined, and I just think it looks sweet - better than those dang apple ibooks.

Beauty is truly in the eyes of the beholder. ;)

The thing that is great about PC laptops is that its an easier fix and upgradable. So if something happens to your video card you can get a new one but if you have a Mac since its soldered (sp?) on you will have to pay $700 if your warranty is up.

kenshi,

Many, if not the VAST majority of Wintel parts are also integrated in laptops. It's not a Mac-only phenomenon.

Windows-based laptop: A few of the millions of consumer products I have bought in my life with which I have never been more dissatisfied.

Mac: Beautiful computers that in my experience are top notch.

I think I've already made up my mind...and I'm in the mareket for a new laptop. To the Apple Store~~~~:)

Good for you. Now start contributing to the conversation. As an Apple user, I'm glad to see you using an Apple. But the last thing the Apple community needs is another obnoxious gloater who doesn't back up his assertions with facts/good reasons.

go linux...

My WINDOWS-BASED laptop almost landed me in anger management. That's more than enough proof that windows DOES NOTHING TO MAKE MY LIFE EASIER.

Thanks for adding absolutely nothing to this discussion.

Also, most technical problems are the fault of the user; any knowledgeable person can use a Windows computer with ease and free of issues, or use any operating system without any frustration.

I don't know about you, but my experience with Acer tells me loud and clear that acer is the worst of the worst since my problems are not isolated. How does a $2k computer break down in 7 MONTHS?

You tell me. AVOID ACER AT ALL COSTS.

And if you want my opinion on Dells here it is: they suck.

And if you want my opinion on Windows in general: It's the worst operating system humanity has ever seen. They're nothing but trouble, they crash all the time, they give you excuse after excuse after excuse why things don't work, they constantly get viruses, they need a billion updates a week that frankly I don't have time to do, they need to be restarted every time I change something, they need this, that and the other every other day, they need to be defragged and cleaned up every other week and frankly, this constant updating, defragging and cleaning up seems to only slow down my computer (and considering the computer was never fast from the beginning, they're slow to the point of frustration), the hard drive itself is spyware galore, there are too many moving parts any one of which can go wrong at any moment anywhere, they're too complicated and too high maintenance for the average user, they induce stress, anger, frustration, rage and every other emotion that will land you in the nearest psychotherapist's office, and worst of all, every version of the system has the same bugs, problems, inefficiencies and incompetences all the time.

The above paragraph sums up my experience with windows based computers. Nobody has the right to blame me for my hatred of windows.

If you think Apple is #1 then thats fine, but you would be wrong as you have not used a IBM/Lenovo or Asus. You may have had a laptop and had a bad experience's, but you have only used that one laptop. How can you compare it to that same laptop or other brands if you have not used all thoroughly. I have worked as a PC service technician for more than 6 years in various environments and different stores. I have talked to a lot more people and have fixed more computers than days that you have been alive if you are under 25. I have probably exceeded that.

My list will stand at

IBM/Lenovo
2.Asus

HP

gateway.
5.Apple.
6.Acer
7.Toshiba
8.Panasonic

Dell
10.Fujitsu
11.Sony

If you agree with this or disagree with it, it doesn't matter to me, because I know that I know more than all of you and am that Confident in my knowledge. Like I said if you think Acer is Horrible, then you can, But in my experience the computers lower on the list are far worse. If you think Apple is the best of the Best, then thats fine, But I have used almost every make and model of consumer products, and I can tell you they are not even close.

You can take my word, or not take it, thats your call, But I suggest you do, Because I know what I'm talking about.

As to the Assumption that the Windows Operating system "is the worst operating system humanity has ever seen", you are simply in denial. Every Implementation of Windows is and had been Great. Windows and Microsoft have dueled computing and have brought computers into almost every household and classroom. It has provided users with a Quality interface that has allowed productivity and advancement in Business, Education and endless other circumstances. It has made computers usable to the Most highly technical of people to those that cant set an alarm clock. Due to this it has also brought the price of computers considerably lower.

If you think Windows is insecurely and is poorly made, Id highly disagree. The computer is a machine that does work for us, If we don't know how to use the Machine then well it probably wont work correctly. Most errors are end user errors. Sadly to say maybe you need to learn how to operate the system.

There is no best or worst OS, IT is up to the individual user to find whats best for them. I use windows, though I am also a heavy user of FreeBSD as well as Solaris. Apple OSX is quite far from the first, and is also quite far from the worse in my terms, just average at best. Nothing special.

What is wireless Internet? How does it work, is there speed for it?

Wireless internet is simply the ability to connect to the internet using the RF frequencies rather than ethernet cables.

Most laptops, both Windows and Mac, come with a wif card built in that allows the computer to connect wirelessly. A USB based wifi card is an option for computers that don't have wifi built in.

Free wifi is fast becoming a standard for campuses, coffee shops, hotels and open air common spaces in major cities.

UCLAri,
I agree that there is more to the PC v. Mac debate that just athetics, especially in regard to software. I just have not been able to convince myself to spend the extra money for a Mac.
