so im thinking about buying dell inspiron 1405. apparently its not sold at fry's and compusa..so i guess i can only order from dell? I am not very clear on how to use coupons people are getting from fatwallet.com or other sites. so if someone can help me find the coupon and walk me thru the steps, that would be greatly appreciated.

so apparently, ucsd is selling the inspiron 1405 for $999 and Dell is for $679. whats up with that or am i getting something wrong. i also searchd CC and some guy bought the 1405 for over $1100 or something (but that was back in early june..so did prices go down A LOT since then?).

what is the correct price i should be looking for?!

Purchase a coupon from eBay and order it from Dell if you really want this laptop. However, I do not recommend this laptop for it's over 5 pounds. Buy something lighter like the Latitude X1 or else you'll end up using your laptop as a desktop.

actually now im rethinking the insprions. im gonna go to Fry's this weekend and get a feel for the notebook lineup. the 1405 might be too heavy/big as neoprototypeazn pointed out. any suggestions of LIGHTWEIGHT and great for college students (doesnt have to be dell)? toshiba maybe?

x series ibm laptops are kind of a waste in my opinion. For teh price, you're better off going with the t-series, as you get a lot more bang for the buck. Sure the x-series is lighter, but there is no dvd/cd bay on them. You have to dock them to get those, and if i recall correctly, you have to pay extra for that.

Go with the t-series for portability, or r-series for the price.

Ultraportable is nice, but not when it digs into usablity.

What do you plan to use your laptop for? If it's only for work, I suggest an ultraportable laptop for a desktop would much better serve your needs for multimedia. If you're not bringing a desktop, do what Ibraasch said and purchase an IBM T series. Also, there's nothing unusable about ultraportable laptops. Nowadays, data is usually transported by removable harddrives so the cd drive just adds weight. The only time I've ever had to use my usb cd drive on my laptop was when I had to boot from my recovery cd.

If you're comparing prices on the Dell (or any other PC), make sure you configure them the same since the configuration of the laptop can easily double the price for the same model. In the case of the 1405, it does seem that UCSD's price is higher than Dell's. They're probably not keeping up with Dell's discounts since they're usually cheaper than Dell.
