I am considering buying a Dell laptop, but when I configure it, it shows that the preliminary ship date is August 26th. I am moving to college August 21st, so if it doesn't arrive by then, I will be screwed. However, I heard that the shipping estimates given by Dell are usually very inaccurate and that the computers generally arrive way before the "preliminary ship date" given when you buy it, and I was wondering if this was true.

So, if you bought a Dell, how long did it take for you to get it after you ordered it?

For my Inspiron 9300, I ordered it on a friday and had it in my hands by the next friday. A friend of mine ordered the Inspiron 6000 on a saturday and had it by the next friday. For both the esimated shipping date was 2-3 weeks after the order date. It looks like Dell overestimates the production time incase something holds it up, but whether it's a good idea to bank on them shipping early is a tough call.

Yeah, I don't know if I should risk it. I live in Boston, and I'm going to college in Pittsburgh, so it's not like I can just go home and pick it up when it arrives. But on the other hand, you and your friend had it in your hands within 1 week, and I'm not leaving until 2 weeks from today, so chances are that it will arrive in time.

My computer came a week or week and a half before the inital estimated ship date, but I would think that around back to school time it would take closer to the preliminary time. Do you have any relatives in Pittsburgh that you could ship it to or can you send it to your college? Just thoughts...

I just bought mine. It mine come in after college starts, but for me orientation is the first week so I wont need a pc ne way. I'll probably just bring my dads pc or use the computer lab until then. I ordered the inspirion 6000, the 700m is too tiny for me :)

Yea, I just ordered my dell inspiron 700m...and they say the delivery date is the 22nd. I'll have been gone for a week. So I hope it does get there earlier.
