How long do you think this laptop could last? Anybody have any prior experience? Is it portable, reliable etc... any help would be greatly appriciated

I have last year’s Studio 14, and I have to say, it’s worked really well. However, the 15’s to me seem to be a bit big: the people I know with them didn’t take them everywhere (only classes they needed a computer for), whereas I would pop my computer into my backpack just on the off chance I might need it.

Secondly, Dell’s build quality cannot be guaranteed. If you want something that’s survivable, get a Lenovo. Less sexy, but built to survive. And another thing in college: battery life is king. If you can go for 8 hours, you’re in great shape. 4 is acceptable: anything less than that and you’ll have to plug in way too often.

I have it with worse specs and I’ve only ahd it for about a year and a half, but for as long as I’ve had it it has worked very well and fast (of course it’ll probably begin to start slowing down soon). Overall, as far as my experience goes, it’s a very good laptop.

The hinge is plastic and a lot of people’s hinges break withing 1 yr. In fact my close friend’s studio 15’s hinge split like a toy after 11 months.

watch out for those physical wear and tears. Your internal hardware is good though.

And I really do not think you need 6 gb of ram. Almost nothing will use more than 4 gb of ram in college. Unless you know you’re going to do something hardcore, stick with 4 gb and save money. And more RAM consumes energy (a little).

Do you guys think I should get the same specs on the studio 14 instead? It comes out to slightly more money. The above price includes a 9-cell battery btw

Not worth it for the price. Those Dell Studios are quite flimsy.

Spec out a Dell Latitude and see how the pricing comes out. 4GB of RAM should be more than enough. If you need the extra HDD space, get an external.

If you want something good looking and strong- Sony Vaio EA, EB, or CW series
If you want something that is super super strong without the looks- Dell latitude or Thinkpad

I’ve heard Sonys (Sonies? lol) are worse than Dells. I just ordered a Studio 14 with an i5 processor. Let’s see how it works out for the both of us :)
