Delta Phi?

hey, two of my friends at cornell told me to join delta phi next year.

can i get some 'outside' info on these Delta Phi guys? whats their reputation on campus? How's their social life? Academic life? kinds of hazing? types of people in it? thanks.

Delta Phi is more commonly known as Llenroc (len-rock). Their fraternity house is in Ezra Cornell's old mansion. I hate talking **** about other houses but they are known to fall into the lower end of the spectrum in regards to reputation. I know one guy in that house and I've met some of his friends but I wouldn't them nerdy as some people do. They seem like average guys I guess but they definietly fall into the bottom tier of fraternities on campus.

Also, I guarantee you that every single house on campus uses some type of hazing during its pledge process.

im like cornellstudent09, in that i hate generalizations. however, that probably does not stop me from making them. as a girl in a cornell sorority, id have to say that llenroc guys are not my favorite, although a girl i know is pretty much OBSESSED with them. but that doesnt say much, because obviously certain girls like certain frats more than others. its all relative. if i were a guy would i join delta phi? no. but that doesnt mean you should i guess.

hey therealstory, which house are you in?

ahh gotcha....haha guess i wont be joining them then...thanks a lot

well don't assume that you won't be joining. Hang out with them and at other houses during your first semester and see which house you like best. Keep a VERY opne mind during rush and don't join a house based on reputation.

They're definitely not a "good" house. I'm not friends with any of the guys in there, but that doesn't mean there aren't cool people in the house. Like people are saying, don't write off (most) houses before rush, you never know where you'll end up fitting in.

Edit- let me answer your questions to the best of my ability.

I've heard that they actually haze a great deal, relative to their social status (better fraternities generally haze more). This might not be true, however, since it's just something I've heard from a friend who knows a guy in the house.

As far a social life, I know llenroc doesn't mix with most sororities.

oh really? haha, I wasnt informed of that...I'm surprised though cause one of the guys was really popular at my HS. but, from what you said, I think I would need something better than that.

I'm not involved w/greek life and I don't really know the reputations, but I know a few guys from llenroc and they were really nice/friendly/didn't seem nerdy. I dunno though.

Hey, I'm also in a sorority on campus and know guys in most of the frats on campus. I would not call llenroc a "good" frat, but I would also not call them one of the worst. I think they only mix with three of the sororities. To me, they're very ordinary guys--a lot of them tend to be very involved on campus and gov/pre law/etc majors. Some of the guys are weird, but most of them are nice and a few are moderatly attractive. Their house is beautiful though.

uh

what are the distinctions between good and bad houses

it all depends who youre friends with. a "good" frat, in my opinion, is attractive for the most part, throws good parties, and isnt nerdy in the least. the majority of guys in frats though arent really nerdy i guess. most of the people who never go out on weekends opt not to rush or pledge, so they get "weeded out" for lack of a better word. there are always exceptions though, because theres no way you can say that everyone who ISNT greek at cornell is nerdy, because thats definitely not the case. there are plenty of cool people who arent in houses. most of the cornell frats are pretty good, though, but what i consider "bad" someone else may love, so its not liek you can just make a list of good and bad ones. most frats mix with a lot of sororities. there are some frats that dont mix a lot, which can sometimes be a huge factor in how "good" it is.

but thats just my take on it i guess.

you can still go to most (all?) parties even if you never pledge a house, rite?

1st semester is all open parties. so yea, you can. 2nd semester is a lot of mixers (1 frat and 1 sorority) which you cant go to unless youre in either the frat or the sorority thats mixing at that party. but around march, the new pledge classes in frats throw pledge parties, which are big open parties again, so everyone can go. basically all parties are open august-december and march-may. but if your good friends are in houses sometimes you can tag along anyway i guess.

There are deff quite a few "nerdy" houses... ie acacia, TKE, seal and serpent (most people don't consider them on the same level as everyother frat though), Aepi, etc.. there's basically a frat for every type of guy.

alright sweet...thanks for the info...

so which ones are the "good" frats? Which ones throw more parties? Which ones are the preppy frats? What about the atheletic ones?

The top four frats are generally accepted to be SAE, Sig Pi, Alpha Delt, and Psi U. Of course there are also a bunch of frats that are very good... Sig Phi, Sig Chi, DU, Phi Kappa Tau, Phi Psi, Delta Chi is on the rise.. come to mind in particular. Alpha Delt is the most tradtionally preppy.. in the sense the guys there dress the actual definition of prep, and many are very wealthy and were raised with really preppy lifestyles. Psi U is old money rich, but they aren't really as preppy.. though they're all pretty well dressed. Sig Pi is "preppy" but more in the abercrombie prep-tool way. SAE is thought of many to be the BEST frat, there is a large range of guys here.. in general the guys tend to be stuck up and think they're hot ****. Some of the guys in SAE are really nice and impressive, though. SAE is worth a lot as a name... I have some friends that joined this year and suddenly started to get noticed by people who wouldnt have cared less about them first semester, just because of their association.

In terms of athletic frats..Phi Psi is the swimmer/diving/football frat, Sig Nu is more of a meathead football/athletics frat, ATO is the lacrosse frat, a bunch of rugby/sprint football players join Chi Psi (or maybe its Chi Phi.. I dont know anything about these two frats reall), DU was sort of sporty for awhile because it had some baseball players in its 2006 pledge class.

cornellchick10 and everyone else, which houses are you in?

What about Alpha Epsilon Pi? I know it's a Jewish frat, and I think that seems pretty cool. Can anyone discuss AEP?

Wakebrk088, every girl can give you her opinion on the top houses, but such opinions will depend on the girl (ie- Jewish girls don't like Psi U or Alpha Delt and preppy girls will), which is why you should disregard everything you hear about houses and go into rush without being biased, so you can pick a house you fit into, not a house that people think is "cool".
