Democrat or Republican?

my friend goes to a mosque every week...but the religion classes I took in school are either contradictory to what my friend tells me or dont tell the whole truth.

Independent, but if I had to choose a party: libertarian

wow bman, you are an idiot. First of all, how long ago was that? uhhh yeah like 4 centuries ago, also when Catholic priests married and nuns regularly bore children. did you pick that up in your high school world studies class or something?
No one is making anyone stick to any religion, even confirmed Catholics regularly go against their religion, as with every religion. I think everyone here probably knows Christians who have sex before marriage and Jews who don't go to temple, so what's your point?

my point is, you shouldn't use a religion that preaches against birth control and women priests as your positive example. Yes, many catholics thankfuly use their own judgement, but if Rome had its way, they wouldn't.

Cathollism is a good idea, but it definitly could be improved.

You can't just "improve" a religion. Tell that to a serious Catholic and see what he/she says. To the followers of a religion, it is truth. It can't just be changed to fit one person's views.

Unless you're Hindu, I suppose.

I guess you never heard of the Reformation.

the great awakening(s)

You are one fool, bmans. And what you say is just a joke, for one. First of all, you are attempting to justify the stupidity of your past arguments by claiming you were actually just going on some kind of an Anti-Catholic crusade? Hah. Do you even know anything about Catholics? Wasn't you who said that you didn't care to learn about anyone's religions but somehow it's okay for you to insult them? Doesn't make much sense. Did you know that Islam, as well as nearly every other religion in the world, preaches against birth control, abortion, homosexuality?

And, um, you think Catholicism is a "good idea?" So you're going to sum up twelve centuries worth of practice, pages and pages of essays, hundreds of popes, doctrines, millions of textbooks written on the subject, and tens of millions of followers worldwide into a "good idea." And then you follow that up by saying "it definitely could be improved." Wow. There are just no words for a person who says things like that. Blows my mind. I think I am just going to go take a seat and try to contemplate the stupidity of what you said. Wow.

Libertarian, I'll vote Republican before Democrat (usually).

Even the Dalai Lama is against gay marriage, sodomy, birth control, abortion rights, etc. Recently a "married" lesbian couple was granted audience with him and asked him to bless their union. He refused. To do so, he said, would be to betray Buddhism.

For some reason, liberals are always shocked to hear this. The truth is that to hear the Dalai Lama speak on matters of sexual morality, you'd think you were listening to the Pope.

Buddhism doesn't have anyone they have to follow. It isn't a religion it is a philosophy. An argument supporting gay marriage, birth control, and abortion can also be made.

A friend of mine at UT heard him speak there last year. She said he's amazing.

Well yeah. If you heard Jesus or Muhammad speak, that'd be pretty amazing too.

I found the God-Evolution thing rather funny. Not because I disagree with it, but because I go to a private, Catholic school, and they TEACH evolution. Someone asked my theology teacher about it back in freshman year and she said, “Who knows for sure? God could have said, we need to change things up a bit, and decided that humans ought to evolve.”

I do agree that religion has no place in the public school system. I just shouldn’t be an issue. It should not be taught, minus mentioning something about it in history class in order to provide context for something like the crusades.

As for the posts about Catholicism and birth control, etc., I’d love to point out that Catholicism is a rather beautiful religion with a lot of fantastic concepts (one of the most notable and undisputed being, don’t kill), but everyone will find something they disagree with, and I think that is ok. I think that if you ask someone to unwaiveringly believe everything within a religion, it is taking away that person’s independence. As long as you respect others’ opinions, I don’t think anyone should have a problem with you disagreeing with the Catholic Church’s stance on birth control, or female priests.

Liberal on social issues
Anarchist on Animal Protections and Drug Control
Progressive on Environment
Socialist on Economics when it involves kids , schools or families
Libertarian on most other issues (and most taxes)
Conservative on Gun Control

Support would go to politicians opposing industrial intervention or supporting gay rights

I am neither a liberal nor a conservative. I think for myself, I decide for myself, and I endorse for whoever or whatever I think is best for me and for the United States as a whole. When voicing my opinion, I may side with a major political party or I may just **** off the majority of Americans. Sometimes, I aggressively oppose what is beneficial for me if that is what it takes to preserve liberty and good morals in this nation. The two-party system allows for people to unite in support of their beliefs and allows for sheep to blindly follow the herd to a bleak future. For that, I support the two-party system but I refuse to actively partake in it.

Three year-old thread, ftw.

Republican

neither, I don’t decide which side of the issue I support based on a party, but rather on information provided to me.
