I’m Asian and I know that I may have lower chances than some other minorities. Still, my last name is very obviously Asian, so I decided to mark my race. The problem is ethnicity: I’m half Chinese, and I feel like a lot of people scoff at Chinese kids or negatively stereotype them. At the same time, I don’t really want colleges to care about my ethnicity too much when considering me (and notice how Asian has the most options for ethnicity under it), and my last name is a very obviously Chinese last name. I know this is really nitpicky, but should I leave my ethnicity blank or go ahead and mark the three different ethnicities I am under Asian?
Put chinese dont lie
If you leave it blank but you have an obviously Asian last name they’ll think you’re not proud of your ethnicity and are trying to game the system by not including your Asian race.
So putting Korean or other Asian ethnicity is better than indicating Chinese? I haven’t seen any data to support that colleges differentiate based on subgroups of Asians. Also I don’t think a white AO will be able to tell the difference from your surname, or at least not care. Just be honest- put the one you identify with most first, and if it allows for more choices add the others. Good luck with your apps!
