Demonstrate "Financial Need"?

So I was looking up scholarships and all the ones that I want to apply to say that you must "demonstrate financial need." So what exactly would they determine financial need to be? Does it solely depend on your family's earnings without any consideration to the cost of the university you will be attending?

If you just look at my family's earnings, you wouldn't think that I would demonstrate financial need but in context with the cost of the college that I want to go to (if I get accepted) which is over $40k per year, I would definitely need financial aid.

Should I even bother to apply to these scholarships?

I think they do take into consideration what your tuition costs are.

It is always worth it IMO- the worst they can say is no- but if you dont apply- you say no for them.

Go ahead and apply. The worst they can say is no.

Well, I know one scholarship that my son got had a form where you put in the costs of the college you expected to attend, along with the amount of money you had to pay for it, yearly income, etc. So they apparently DID take into consideration how much the college cost. You should be able to get an idea by looking at the application form, although they do usually leave it rather vague.

Ok, thanks everybody! I think I'm just going to apply to all of them and see which ones I (hopefully) get.
