Rochester is one of my top choices, if not my top choice now.

Other than visiting campus (which I cannot really do) and having an interview (which I will be having), what are some ways of demonstrating interest to Rochester so that they know how interested I am. Is the only way to physically travel to campus?

You can reach out to your admissions officer and introduce yourself to him or her, contact him or her periodically, become more than an application. Rochester lists interest as “considered” in the acceptance process, so do what you can to demonstrate your interest, develop your personality, and share your accomplishments with the officer. Be sure to share with them anything that your application has not. You’re a multitalented person who will bring a lot to the campus and the officer needs to know about those talents and what you’ll bring.

My D was told my an admission officer last year that they track how often you log into your Roc account. So log in every week to check your application status!

If there are any big college fairs in any major city near you, find out if UR will have representatives there, and fill out their info card–evidence you were there and expressed interest. Talk to the rep–they may take note of your name, who knows?

If you have a major in mind, I believe they also note if you contact the head of that dept. My son met with the dept head of his major and I think they tracked that. Not sure if you email the dept head with questions if that gets tracked as well but you could try.

This is what I learned during the whole process (I got in!)…

Identify the counselor assigned to your area and establish a relationship with him/her asap. If they’re able to put a face to the app, they will vouch for you in the admissions committee.

Ask for a phone q&a conversation with your counselor (if you really… really can’t go to a college fair)… ask good questions that can’t be answered through the website. I think a lot of students think that the more questions you ask the better you will look… however, i think this is not the case as they have probably answered “whats the student to teacher ratio?” a million times. ask personal questions that can’t be answered through any other means. they will notice.

try to go to a college fair… i had to travel across countries to reach a college fair with rochester representatives… if you make the effort, they will notice.

meet someone that is enrolled in the school. ask for their opinions on the process.

enjoy the ride! college admissions become more and more difficult every year… however, this also means that you will have to work extra hard… which will ultimately will make you a better student/person.
