Demonstrated Interest

How much emphasis/consideration does Pomona put on demonstrated interest?

I think they put a lot. I heard youre not even considered seriously unless you trek out to Pomona and get an on campus interview. Unless youre from a low-income family or something.

I disagree. Both my daughter and her classmate were accepted without having visited. I can't recall my daughter doing any demonstrated interest there.

Hi, Carolyn -

Welcome to CC! Pomona, as with its peer institutions, will probably consider it one factor in the total package. Of course, the ultimate demonstration of your interest is applying ED! :) That said, you don't need to do an on-campus interview. D did an alumni interview in our hometown. If you are concerned about demonstrating your interest, contacting them even by e-mail to request a view book or registering your attendance with the Pomona admissions rep at a college fair (if your HS hosts a fair) would be just a couple of ways.

Good luck!

I think if you are on the border demonstrated interest could make a difference. My son interviewed at Pomona. We live in N. Calif. so it was not as difficult for him to make the trip as it would be for say somebody on the east coast. He was admitted from the waitlist. The fact that he had met, in person, the individual who would turn out to be his advocate to the admissions committee could have made the difference. Although contact with him the first few weeks of the semester has been sparse I think he feels Pomona was the right choice for him. If you are looking for a small LAC with the resources of a much larger institution I don't think you could find a college any better than Pomona.

Though demonstrated interest may have mattered to Pomona back in 2008, it certainly doesn’t anymore. When the Pomona’s Dean of Admissions visited by high school earlier this month, he explicitly told us that demonstrated interest isn’t considered a factor come decision time. I was taken aback by this, too, but I guess that’s just how it is now!

If you live in California, are Asian, or have an SAT score of a 2300+ (or any such combination), then yes they probably do. You have to prove that you want to go. However, for candidates who don’t meet these requirements…interest probably won’t get you accepted or rejected. It doesn’t matter.

I live in NJ and have been on a tour at the Pomona campus, but have never had an interview. Do you think that makes a difference for me? Or even does being from the east coast help?

The Common Data Set says level of applicant’s interest is not considered.

Having an on-campus interview is really only important if you’re from SoCal with easy access to the school.

Update: I was at a Pomona info session today. The speaker said that if you live within two hours of Pomona, they do expect you to come to campus to interview.

I’m a current student, and I didn’t really demonstrate any interest before applying…I actually decided to apply somewhat last minute. I’m not from California, though, so that may have made a difference.

bubble, are you an athlete? did you apply early? i noticed in your previous posts that you learned you’d been accepted in the fall? just wondering, because an ED app does qualify as demonstrated interest. might help others to have a framework for your comments about applying “somewhat last minute.”

I didn’t apply early and I wasn’t a recruited athlete.

The ED app doesn’t put you at an advantage due to demonstrated interest, as all ED applicants are demonstrating the same level of interest. The advantage comes from the fact that the school knows you will attend, if accepted.
