My D got admitted in NU under ED2 for Chem. Engineering. Woohoo!! She got a 10k Dean’s scholarship and there is no word yet on Fin. aid and I waiting for it with bated breadth.
Does the school give close to EFC any idea? Or it would be more than that?
Also, does anyone have any idea on how to minimize the out of pocket costs? I read somewhere that she can take some courses in a community college to save on tution costs. Is this even possible and If yes, can she do during summer? I am not sure how it actually works. Any insight would be helpful.
Once enrolled it is not permitted to take courses at another college unless that course is not offered at Northeastern and is appropriate for the program. This is the case for most universities.
Have you run their net price calculator? FAFSA EFC is pretty meaningless in determine how a college will define need.
If your financial situation is pretty simple (no divorced parents, you do not own a business) then the Net Price Calculator is pretty accurate for NEU. Since they are a CSS school, FAFSA is not as relevant. They do have the Northeastern Promise which is nice because they guarantee that your need based (and merit) aid will never go down even if your finances improve over your time at NEU. Need-based aid will automatically be increased at the same rate as tuition increases.
FAFSA EFC is generally far different from what the school calculates your ability to pay. That being said, my FAFSA EFC my freshman year was about $18.5k and after all my financial aid (primarily scholarships but also included work-study and I think $1500 in subsidized loans) my family was expected to pay about $22k. Your mileage may (will) vary.
all helpful answers. Thank you all.
One more question. The net price calculator has this verbiage: The estimated net cost does not include merit-based scholarships. Northeastern University offers several merit-based scholarship programs, ranging from $5,000 to full tuition annually.
What does it really mean? If I got merit scholarship of 10k and if my net price comes to 40k, then does that mean my net price would be 40k-10k = 30k OR 10K plus whatever fin. aid they add in order to bring my net price to 40k?
@matawandad Merit and need aid do not stack. If Northeastern determines your need to be $40,000/year and you receive $10,000 in merit aid then you would receive $30,000 in need based aid.
The max merit aid is $30,000 not full tuition.
@TomSrOfBoston NEU does offer some full tuition scholarships for Torch and Boston area scholarships, per the website, and perhaps some departments offer full tuition scholarships from time to time. Other than that, yes, the max merit aid is $30k.
