I got invited to be in the Deneb Stars Program for the class of 2021. Does anyone know anything about this program? Is it worth it to be in it? Any information is appreciated.
I’m also curious about this. Based off of the email they sent me, it kind of sounds like a support group.
@MRALAN @Pandagus17 Hi! I am a freshman currently in the Deneb Stars program. You are right, it’s a support group. Because of Washu’s recent initiatives to admit more pell grant recipients, Deneb is a new program this year that aims to help those students. You get a community of people from similar economic backgrounds as you (hard to find at washu because it’s pretty affluent), get exclusive course mentors that help only Denebs with classes like calc/chem, and even help you get connected with resources if you struggle to pay for something.
Personally, since Deneb is new, I am not sure if it’s worth it completely. Since you get full-ride anyways, you don’t really have a problem with paying, like food. Also, for class related expenses, there are usually scholarships that reach $1000s so… Deneb is not the only way to get support.
However, the Deneb organizers are comprised of 2-3 PhDs and multiple graduates that try to help you. That’s a huge resource if you ever need advice. I would go to the first few meetings (once a month) and see if you like it. Legit free food.
