I had planned to transfer to TAMU for the Spring '09 term, but I just received a rejection letter and I don't understand why. I have a 3.6 GPA, have been on the deans list for two semesters, and am in good academic standings with my current University (which is an A&M branch). In high school I had good act and sat scores and was tenth in my class, but they didn't let me in then either. I tried to call for an explanation but there is never anyone available to take my call. Any idea?

Did you follow transfer classes on TAMU's degree tracks? I spoke with an advisor last week and she told me that if you have not completed certain courses on the degree track they will NOT consider you for admission. If you have any W, WF, or I on your transcript that could really hurt your chances for admission. If that is not the case that is just baffling.

Also, you said you were tenth in your class in high school and they still denied your acceptance? They is very odd because A&M accepts most students from high school that are in the top 10% of their class.

Jenni20, I hate when a college rejects a good student. Admissions can be so unfair!

Now I'm scared. I will end up with a 3.66 by the time I apply for spring admission. I actually have a W in my transcript.

sinornithoides, is one W really that bad? I dropped my class algebra class because I decided to take math for non math/science majors. Is that a good reason?

Jenni20, have you consider applying to UT?

Out of my 49 hours at my current university, going on 66, I have only dropped one course and received an X for it and that was because I realized that I didn't need that course. With my letter they sent me a list of all my transferrable courses and it looked like the majority of them would transfer over. So I guess I'm still just really confused. I'm actually kind of mad because I have a friend who went to Blinn College and she automatically gets accepted because of that, and no offence, but her scores and GPA are not as good as mine. Sorry to rant, but I just think they owe me an explanation.

Well, there's always OU. LOL

"Well, there's always OU. LOL"
OMG I'm laughing so hard!!

Yeah apparently A&M likes people who go to Blinn.
Crap, now I'm thinking that I won't get in since I go to Austin CC :(

Jenni20, what are your plans now?

Blinn College has a program that if you go there for two years and have a 3.0 GPA or higher you are automatically admitted into TAMU. I can only imagine that many transfer students are coming from Blinn, making it harder for transfer students at any other colleges to get accepted.

Honestly Jenni20 you should try to transfer over to UT-Austin instead.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I had actually not considered UT until now, unfortunately its to late to apply for the spring 09 term, and I'm afraid that if I wait til next fall I will already have to many hours built up to transfer. I am actually still waiting on a reply from Baylor and hoping its not the same fate considering that both schools have a lot of the same standards.

Being 10th in your graduating class you were probably top 10%, so you were an auto admit. What's up with that?

Call and find out WHY!! Better yet, go visit.

Ok, so finally someone called me back and apparently they didn't let me in because as a biology major, I was missing 3 hours of chemisty. So now I'm aggrivated that because I was short three hours they didn't let me in. I am also double majoring with Psychology and I didn't have enough upper level math class so thats also why. Sorry but I think thats stupid.
And in regards to the tenth in my class, it was a small class, only about 60 people so that doesn't put me in the top ten percent, but still I felt like my ACT and SAT scores were strong enough then that it shouldn't have mattered. But I'm over it. I got into Baylor and maybe eventually will transfer to UT. But I'm through trying to get into A&M.

You better check with UT admissions as well. I am sure transfer requirements are comparable and those missing classes are probably needed there, too.

As far as the top 10% rule goes. Just like UT-Austin the top 10% rule eliminates a huge number of applicants from the pool. Because the colleges HAVE to accept top 10% that only leaves a small number of spots open for non top 10%'ers. So if you weren't there or your school doesn't rank you have to be STELLAR, to set yourself apart, at both TAMU and UT. So if your SATs were "ok" that could have been something keeping you from being accepted in the first place. I know you, Jenni20, probably already know this being from Texas but I just wanted to let OOS students know too. I'm really sorry about your denial, that just seems unfair. But I agree with everyone else check UT because there might be a chance you could be CAPPED and later transfer.

^ jenni, that comment about you not being an official "top 10%er" because of your small class size is just not true. I currently attend a small private school in Austin with a graduating class of less than 40 students. The top 10% rule still applies for us...I'm valedictorian; I would know. I've been told frequently by A&M, UT-Austin, etc., that I'm in automatically. Anyway, it was definitely not the size of your class that makes you not top 10%. Maybe your school wasn't accredited or something :(

Well technically if she is not 1,2,3,4,5, or 6 in her class of 60 students, she isn't in the official top 10%. Therefore the top 10% rule doesn't apply, she isn't auto-accepted. And "definitely not the size of your class that makes you not top 10%" how is that true? Class size and rank are the factors that calculate percentages.

ohhhhhhhh gotcha. I thought she was saying that "since her class size was very small, the Texas law about top 10% doesn't apply" or something. Well, yeah, obviously if she was below 6th, she wasn't top 10%.

Hey Jenni20,

I'm a transfer with a 3.327, and have been on the dean's list for 3 semesters in a row. I'm a veteran, and I intended on joining the corps of cadets. I broughtmy GPA up from a 1.3 to a 3.327 after I got home from deployment. Im also listed in the top 15% of the College of Science and Math at my current university. I got denied into Mechanical Engineering. I went up there last Wednesday and spoke with the assistant head of Engineering Technology (My second choice), and it seems that they never recieved my app for review. So, I gave him copies of all my LORs, my class rankings, and my essay and he is going to try and resurrect my transfer app. for further review. So right now im waiting to see what happens there.

Just wanted to let you know that your not alone.
