Denied by your safeties (or matches), accepted by your Reaches?

I Wish!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was suprised that son was waitlisted at Kenyon, Oberlin and Carleton -- he was a match for all three, I'd think, though maybe a high match at Oberlin. He was accepted at Reed and U Chicago.

Actually, Carleton is harder to get into than Oberlin (unless you mean the Conservatory). But acceptance at Chicago and waitlist at Kenyon (and Oberlin) qualifies for this thread.

Accepted by Harvard and Stanford. Rejected by Brown (relative match/safety?!).

It's actually not that uncommon for someone to be denied by their safety schools. It is a question of yield. If the school believes (in accordance with the schools you were required to tell them you applied to) that they are the very bottom of your list and an unlikely choice for you then they may deny you and in the very least waitlist you hoping for a letter or indication from you that you would choose their school. I know someone who got into Harvard and Princeton but was denied to University of Michigan in state.

William and Mary (4th choice) was said to be a safety for me but I was waitlisted. I DID get into UVA which was my top choice anyway. I got into all my other safety/matches as well.

Waitlisted by Vanderbilt and Elon U (which was actually my first choice until I didn't get in).
ACCEPTED TO UCLA. I was totally not expecting that. Haha. I'm still in shock.

got in Tufts,
waitlisted by grinnell and kenyon

yay Tufts

How about your reach schools? Do they accept you if the school believes that they are on the very top of your list? I'm waiting for a decision from Wesleyan, but I already got waitlisted by both Colby and Oberlin. Do you think I have any chance?

What's up with Kenyon?
I was waitlisted there (my match school) even though I made it clear it was my first choice, and accepted at Cornell University (Ivy League) and University of Virginia (reach because I'm out of state).

Update: Accepted by Dartmouth... but waitlisted by Middlebury.

accepted at georgetown, waitlist at brown..... flat-out hated on by cornell. whatevvvvvvvver.

i'm still scratching my head at how i got into Colgate yet was rejected by Bucknell

Accepted:

Case (17k)
NYU Stern (7.5k)
Lehigh
UMich
MSU
Emory

Waitlisted:

BC
WashU

Rejected:

Cornell
CMU

Flat out rejected by CMU, even though I got into many schools harder to get into / better ranked. Waitlisted by BC even though I got into even more schools harder to get into / better ranked.

Accepted Emory and NYU Stern (7.5k scholarship) but waitlist BC / rejected CMU? o.O

Well...60% my matches, 30% of my reaches, 100% of my safeties, good thing I picked a well-rounded list?

well, i got waitlisted at Quinnipiac which i thought was my biggest safety, and yet i got in to villanova, fordham, providence and union.

WesDad: In all honesty, I think he made a little Common App faux pas. He wrote a really great essay for his U Chicago app using one of their very quirky prompts, and then used that essay as a "Choose your own essay topic" for the Common App. So it was easily clear to other schools that he was applying to Chicago. I wonder that they assumed (rightfully) that they were his second choices! Anyway, it's all turned out happily for us.

Accepted: Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, USC
Waitlisted: Brandeis
Rejected: CMC, Colgate

Brandeis doesn't compare to Berkeley and UCLA but whatever

my friend got into Harvard but got totally denied by NYU! Weird, I know.

Something happened to me too.... Four highly competitive colleges accepted or waitlisted me, but one match flat out denied me. Unfortunately for me, that match was my no. 1.

I applied to a whole bunch of reach-y colleges (for the sake of my parents, mostly) and ended up like this:

rejected at MIT, Stanford, Princeton, Cornell, and UChicago.
accepted at Caltech.

None of them are safeties, obviously (or even matches, with the possible exception of UChicago), but it still looks a bit strange.
