Denied & Depressed- OOS

UNC was my top choice, so getting that news really hit home, I pretty much sobbed for 30 minutes straight and I am in no way an emotional person.
Some stats:
Excellent Recs (Both teacher and counselor) & Essays
4.9/5.0 UW GPA, 34 ACT Composite
5 AP Test English Lit + French

I applied for Journalism, and not getting into one of the top programs in the nation pretty much blows. I haven't heard back from some other top Journalism programs (I would rather not name the schools, but they're well known J-Schools) that seem to have more favorable admissions rates, so we'll see.

I realize that UNC is very difficult for OOS applicants and I want to congratulate everyone who got in.

Anyways, if anyone is feeling mopey, feel free to add your thoughts :) There's probably a thread for this, but I'm too lazy right now to look for it...

If you really want to attend, transfer, you have a great transfer application already, plus for transfer it doesn’t matter what state you are from.

I felt the same way last year (though I was waitlisted)…which is funny bc I never considered it one of my “top” schools, but it was one I wanted to get into just because I knew they admitted only the best of the best from out-of-state. For them to say “well you’re allmmosssttt good enough, but not quite” was tough. Especially when you consider that I’d also been admitted EA to Michigan and had received a likely from UVA. I do think if I’d gotten in I would have given it a really good look though.

But a year later, I could care less. Sure, it would be a great school to attend, but there are SO MANY great schools out there! I love where I’m at right now, and don’t believe anything could top it…but I know others at other schools feel the same way, and that’s the beauty of it all.

So don’t get too down on yourself, you’re a great candidate for a lot of schools, and the best thing you can do is pick yourself up and go on to lead a successful college career, maybe proving to UNC that they should have admitted you along the way.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the encouragement guys, I really appreciate it.
After writing that, I talked it over with friends and family and also got a lot of good advice. I still have 10 schools to hear back from, and I got into my “safety” (though I should probably not be cocky and call it that), so I’m in better shape than other people I know.
I might consider transferring, but I think it might be difficult to adjust socially post- transfer…It’s definitely something to consider.

Thanks again for your words

Wow, my stats is very similar to yours. I honestly don’t know why admissions people admitt or reject certain applicants, but I think you have great stats.
College admissions on the whole is weird. Some colleges liked my applicantion but some just straightout rejected it. It just depends on the person reading it, I guess.

Don’t be down! College are like people - there are tons and tons and tons of places in this country where you could be happy, and there is no such thing as your college “soul mate,” - you make a place your home.

You’ve got some great numbers and I’m sure that another wonderful school would be happy to have you. In fact, I’m sure UNC would be happy to have you, but it’s just a matter of more qualified people applying than they can take. Don’t take it personally and good luck!!
