Denied from CSE

CSE was my second choice college. However, I received my letter today informing me that I was denied because I had not completed the prerequisite coursework which is Calculus, Physics, and Chemistry. Only problem is I have indeed completed all of those courses and have even completed up to Calculus III. I am applying as a transfer. I'm going to call them first thing Monday morning. But has anyone ever had this problem with their application? Also, if for some reason they can't review my application for CSE can I ask them to consider me for CLA? My first choice is Carlson and they have just forwarded my materials to them a few days ago so I am still waiting to hear from them but I would also like an equal shot at being reviewed by CSE or CLA. Any input?

The one possibility I can think of is that your physics and chemistry classes were not sufficiently advanced. Have you taken a year of calculus based physics? Otherwise, they probably made some sort of mistake.

^^ I have taken non-calculus based physics I and II. However, for my intended major within CSE, it requires that I take non-calculus based physics with the option of taking honors physics which is the calculus based one. If for some reason this is what they mean by not fulfilling the prerequisite work is it possible to ask them to review my application for CLA?

I got into CSE and have never taken a physics or calc course (took Intro to Chem), so it seems kind of weird you didn’t. Are your stats low? It might be because I had a 3.917 GPA and 31 ACT (33 the second time).

^ I’m assuming you applied as a freshman? I applied as a transfer so they have certain prerequisites for college courses. I believe the admissions requirements are different between freshman and transfers

Not taking a year of calculus based physics might be a deal breaker if you want to transfer into CSE. CLA will not require calculus based physics but I’m not sure exactly how they evaluate transfer applications to different colleges within the University of Minnesota.

Christopher - I am so sorry you did not receive the news you wanted. The U’s course descriptions are on a website that is currently down for maintenance. Tonight or tomorrow take a look and see if you have the equiv of Chem 1015 or Chem 1021. CSE requires 1021.

When did you apply? i thought the deadline was 3/1 and assumed they would look at all the apps after that date - guess not

Called admissions this morning. UMTYMP student- you were right. I was told that calculus based physics is required as a transfer. However, I did ask if I could then have my application sent to CLA and he gladly did it for me. Thanks for all your input/help guys.

I’m glad you got that worked out… about how long did it take for you to receive your admissions decision from them? I’m also applying as a transfer and I’m anxiously waiting as I got accepted in my #2 school and Minnesota is my #1 school.

CSE made their decision within two weeks. I am currently waiting on Carlson and CLA. Minnesota is also one of my top choices. What was your #2 school?

Well actually my tie for #1 is UMinn and UWashington, but I don’t really like the cost of living and tuition costs of the Seattle area. My number 2 is University of Missouri, I really like the area around the university and the overall student life there. Also I’m glad to see they are now in the SEC for football! I applied to quite a few other Midwest state-flagship universities like Oklahoma, LSU, Kansas… trying to stay closer to where I’m from as I’ve already moved away from Michigan and went to the University of Miami (Florida).

I’m a pretty non-traditional student so its hard to really gauge where I’m at in terms of being accepted or whatnot, but so far I’ve gotten accepted to University of Arizona and University of Missouri. No rejections thus far.

For what it’s worth, I’m a Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering major.
