I was denied from UF.
UCF was my second option, but after visiting the campus I realize that it’s not for me. SO now it’s FSU
I have to start planning ahead quickly now, and I could really use some helpful insight.
–I was accepted for the fall term with a scholarship, and I’m currently planning on majoring in biochemistry. Maybe biomedical sciences or just biology. The goal is to reach medical school. However, I would like to start in the summer, is there any way I can switch into the summer term?
–I have not filed a housing application. When should I complete it? And which is the preferred dorm for freshman?
–How is the social aspect of FSU?
–Can I get in to the Honors college? I intend to apply. My stats are as follows:
SAT: 1300 (probably best if I don’t report this)
ACT:30
uw gpa: 3.33
w gpa: 4.38
taken 16 AP classes by the time I graduate hs.
top 25% of class (550)
hispanic male
plenty of leadership positions in clubs
most of volunteer hours come from volunteering at a rehab hospital
–Any good hospitals in the campus proximity that I can volunteer/work at?
–I have fl pre-paid, IS tuition, and bright futures FAS
Most importantly, am I making the right decision?
Virtually all of my friends have gotten in to UF, and those that didn’t are going to FSU. Am I correct when I say FSU is a good stem school? Or when I say that FSU is the #2 Florida school? It just seems like a big slap in the face to me, this whole process being rushed and not completely thought out. It’s a new place, new people, new everything. At least it’s only two hours from home.
Any other advice would be helpful. I understand college is what you make of it, but UF was my #1. I had everything planned out. It’s a huge heartbreak, but life goes on. Thank you.
Fill out your housing application now. Even if you decide not to attend, you’ll only be out $50 provided you notify them before May 1. Azalea and Magnolia are the newest dorms. To be honest, they all sound about the same.
If you received the Freshman Scholarship, then you should be able to apply to HC.
FSU is an excellent school so best to embrace it and move ahead. If eligible for Honors you should have received an email inviting you to apply. Re Housing you missed the early window to apply so your choices will be limited - doubt Azalea or Magnolia mentioned above will work out as they are popular. If you are eligible for Honors that will offer you a chance to live in Landis. Otherwise, explore some of the LLC’s as they are associated with specific dorms - I would do this for sure with a poor housing number. Note that the LLC applications have deadlines as well - maybe Feb 15 but check.
My son got into FSU and UF and has chosen FSU. We visited both schools and he knew right away that he wanted to go to FSU. Have you visited the campus? It has a wonderful home feeling that we just didn’t feel at UF. Good luck with your decision.
Firstly, I am sorry to hear that you did not get into UF this year. One of my best friends also did not get in and that was her dream school too.
Definitely apply for housing now like other posters said and look into LLC’s as you did miss the early window.
I am also a Biology: Pre-med student who got accepted to FSU and is pursuing Honors and the Honors Medical Scholars. I would recommend applying for both of those programs though I will warn you that the Medical Scholars one is really long and due on the 14th along with 3 recommendations.
FSU has a really strong Bio and STEM program overall from my research. Chances at honors though is really uncertain, their average stats last year were a 33 ACT or a 1500 SAT on their website. That is not to say that you cannot get in though, they just weigh it heavily.
If you visited the campus, liked it, and could see yourself their, then you are definitely not making a bad choice. Really, the only person who can determine what the best choice is though, is you. Weigh everything out from cost, strengths of the programs, club offerings, interships and volunteer opportunities, food, housing, ect… and then make a well informed decision. Good luck to you and if you have any other questions, let me know!
First, submit your housing contract as soon as possible to get the best priority number you can. Then focus on the Honors application - if you get into the Honors college you should get housing in Landis or Gilchrist even with a high priority number. If you don’t go Honors then possibly look into a science related LLC. My daughter is a junior at FSU and was accepted to both UF and FSU. When she toured the FSU campus she was instantly sold, especially when she met the Honors Program advisor and toured the Honors building. She also participated in UROP (University Research Opportunity Program), which you might want look into. It’s a great way to get to know professors or graduate students in your major. My daughter has never once regretted choosing FSU over UF and I think you will find it a great place to spend 4 years. And if not, maybe transferring later might work too.
About one tenth of one percent of college freshmen will attend UF this year. The remaining 99.9 percent of college freshmen will be at other universities, and they will have wonderful experiences. You will love FSU-- my two oldest attended FSU, and my third child is currently still a student. All of them have been served well by the university. They were able to get internships at good companies, and my oldest daughter is currently attending UF graduate school in engineering (a weekend program); she is well prepared and competing perfectly well with the UF grads.
I’m a UF grad who works in the medical field and has taught previously (many years ago) at FSU. My son has very similar HS stats as you. He also was denied admission at UF and is enrolling at FSU. I raised him a Gator b/c I’m an alum and we live close to Gainesville. He was going to Gator games since he was five yeras old. I wasn’t surprised by the denial, given the level of competition last year. My son visited FSU campus prior to decision day and really liked it. He’s already wearing Seminole clothes and very excited to attend FSU. I’m very proud of him and was happy that he got into one of the two schools.
He also was accepted to UCF with scholarship. We chose FSU over UCF b/c we believe it is better academically, we want him to have a more traditional residential college experience (UCF is still mostly a commuter school), and we’d rather be in a more traditional college town (most of the student activity centers around campus at FSU, whereas UCF students spread out and are exposed to bigger city life).
I believe that the most significant factors in you attending a good medical school are your grades in premed classes, overall GPA, MCAT scores, and practicum experience. These will outweigh whether you went to UF or FSU in medical school admission.
Don’t be discouraged by not getting into UF. Heck, my son is a legacy and we are both moving on full steam with his education at FSU. Also, we know of two students at his high school that had better stats than him and were denied admission to FSU. One student was denied at FSU and got accepted to UF, go figure! FSU’s admission stats this year are very impressive and the school has moved up high in rankings for public universities.
Graduated from UF undergrad and FSU grad school. Socially, FSU beats UF. Best Three years of my life. Son goes there and he is really happy about the male/female ratio. Both great institutions, however being in Tallahassee you get the benefit of living in the capitol when it comes to job opportunities. Atlanta and New Orleans are nearby for a great weekend get aways. More diversity, more culture. I love UF but it was in a middle of cow pastures. Nothing to do after the first semester. Got boring quick.
the honors application was due February 13th, and has changed since my oldest started she needed an 1300 SAT, where as now you need to be a national merit or been offered a freshman scholarship, FSU honors program is now very hard to get into
as for the dorms FSU has torn down the moldy old dorms and is building new ones, my oldest had Salley as freshman but that is gong to torn down after this year I heard and my middle did a LLC in Bryan Hall, old dorm but in the middle of campus and near everything and this year she lives in Ragans which is for upper classman and apartment style
most students live off campus and off campus housing is cheaper than dorms for most but you have to pay year round, so it works out about the same in the long run
