Denied from WashU

Unlike most people, I was not waitlisted, I was just denied. This scares me. I don't mind too much because I didn't really want to go there anyway, but what does this mean about my other apps? I'm waiting to hear from Vanderbilt and Colgate, and I was feeling mildly confident about both of them until yesterday. Should I be much more scared than I am? My scores are below. I didn't visit WUSTL but I did visit both Vandy and Colgate and interviewed with Vandy.

ACT: 33
SAT IIs: 800 Math II, 760 Bio
GPA: 3.333(uw) 3.978 (w)
Rank: School does not rank
ECs: 3 varsity sports, year round job
Essay was pretty good, had it checked by a few teachers

I would not read much into it. They got a record number of applicants. 25,000. Can’t accept or waitlist all the qualified students! Don’t listen to people who will try to chance you based on your grades; it’s relative to where you are in your school, even if it doesn’t rank (school profile should give at least a ballpark of where you stand).

Ok, you GPA seems really low for Vandy, WashU or Colgate.
Do you go a a particularly challenging HS and/or take a very difficult curriculum?

Are you the sxephil from YouTube?!?

@soze, both, one of the best HS in my state and I took almost all weighted or AP classes
@liberationn15 No, but I am a fan of his and my name is Phil

EDIT: @soze I know that it is low and that is the major thing I’m worried about. I’m hoping they see my ECs and see that one of the reasons it was so low was because I had so many ECs.

Ok, here’s the thing:
(trust me I feel your pain, I’m going through this whole mess with my son right now.)
The problem for you, is that unless there is something truly unique and special about you, they will have no problem finding someone with just as good ECs as you PLUS a higher GPA and test scores.

I hope I’m wrong, but Vandy does seem a high reach for you. Colgate might be slightly less of a long shot, but it’s still a long shot.

Where else did you apply?

Also: Are you from the east coast?

I’m asking because I have a sneaky feeling that colleges are suspicious of east coast kids who don’t submit SAT scores. They are likely assuming that you took it, and the result was bad (whether this is the case or not, I know it’s not fair).

Here’s my take on this: they got 25,000 applications. That’s 100 x 250 applications. That’s 20,000 + 5,000…how many can they accept? How many do they have to put on their waitlist? Sadly though, that was happening all over. All schools, or almost all, had huge increases in the numbers.

So what does mean to you? Did you need FA? WashU is need-aware, not need-blind. Did you apply to any safeties? My guess (and it’s ONLY a guess) is that they wanted to see some leadership (Captain of a sports team? Head XXX at your job). It would have “nice” if you could have fit in a club or volunteer in your schedule, but you didn’t.

Have hope. Ask your GC to contact your top choice and tell them they are #1.

@liberationn15 haha why would sxephil from YouTube be applying to WashU?

@phil your GPA seems kinda low to me, but still, don’t give up.

sxephil, I was denied as well. However, I wouldn’t fear on your chances too much for your other schools as WashU is known for their unpredictable admission. I purposely transferred out of my high school into a private school for the sake of being better prep for my future. I was rejected whereas people from my high school were accepted into WashU and I know FOR SURE that they’re not qualified students for the school if they choose to go there. So, for WashU, I wouldn’t worry about being rejected because they’re not very good at playing this game.

Also, take note that WashU doesn’t do need blind. That means that they even look into your family’s income and base their decision off of that. Like I said…they could have rejected you (or me for that matter) because they might have a lot of people applying from where you’re from and they had to keep it at a minimum, etc…there’s lots of ridiculous reasons why you weren’t chosen like I wasn’t. And WashU was my top school and I even interviewed for it.

Asking for chances on a thread like this is like asking someone to predict winning lottery numbers. By the way Moon&Star, you should not be passing on info that has no basis regarding other students or school financial/admission policy.
