are there any transfer students that have had this experience in the past? what is it like socially not living in a dorm?

i was guaranteed housing for second semester, but i still don’t feel at all good about the situation. it’s hard enough transferring to a new school when you live on campus, but OFF campus…?

this might be rash, but i was also recently accepted to jhu. should i consider putting in a deposit? am i making too big of a deal out of this situation?

any advice would be greatly appreciated. thank you

hey sorry to hear that, if it's any consolation there are supposed to be activities during orientation for commuter students specifically. There are plenty of ways to still be part of the Barnard community. I totally sympathize with you though, I'm really nervous about housing too.
btw, how did you hear the news, by email? ebear? I still haven't recieved word about housing (im a transfer too) Also, when did you turn in the housing form?

Many of Barnard's dorms are "off campus." If you put together an apartment of a group of transfers denied housing your experience would not be much different from some of the dorm experiences.

hey i just got a letter saying i was denied transfer housing, and to strongly consider deferring admission till spring 2008 in which case i would be guaranteed housing.. i live in nyc and I'm kind of antsy so I don't think i'll just deal..sucks though

I am so sorry about that, hope2transfer0! I did not exactly understand from your post, though, whether or not you plan to start in the fall anyway. I hope that you do! I imagine that Barnard just had a higher-than-anticipated yield in the first-year class for this fall and therefore a bit of a housing crunch. I do know that many go abroad second semester, including one or two of my daughter's suitemates, so housing for then should be no problem (as they indicated, I guess). Maybe you will even end up with my d!!!

Any way, chin up...it's all gonna end up okay. Barnard is a wonderful place and you at least could go and live at home for this one semester....

I know housing is tight this year. My daughter is a continuing student and does not have housing; she is on a waitlist -- she is guaranteed housing, but she is going to get whatever room is available, and I assume that will probably come from the same group of rooms that would typically be assigned to transfers. And she is not the only one -- she's got at least 2 friends who had hoped to be her suitemates who also ended up on a waiting list.

Since the admissions office told you they could guarantee housing in the spring, I'll bet you can get that guarantee even if you start classes in the fall and commute -- you'll get a spot that opens up because of students going abroad to study.

On what grounds do they decide which transfers are given housing? Because I'm dirt poor and received my acceptance quite early, accepted immediately, and filled out my housing sheet the day Ebear went up....so.....is it just chance? To be honest, I'm pretty miffed. I just gave up my apartment, quit my job and bought a 600 dollar plane ticket to New York: nowhere to go now!

You can find reasonably "affordable" (at least relative to dorm costs) apartments nearby if you get together with some of the other transfers denied housing. You should ask Barnard if they can hook you up with them.

Also, will they still give you your housing portion of financial aid?
