My son got the email he was denied for Computer Science.
3.5 UW GPA
1440 SAT (750 math/690 - only took once)
2 Comp Sci APs got 5s on both AP Tests
Am I right to be shocked or am I looking at the wrong info on what you need to get in?

I am surprised by that result as well
I’ve seen some pretty solid students denied this year, including my roommate’s sister. We are wondering if they are trying to crack down harder on admissions this year.
I should add an update. We spoke with our regional admissions counselor, and he did not get in because of the major he applied for. For those not familiar RIT accepts by major. He applied for Computer Science. They offered a few other majors in the computers school and he chose Computing Exploration which gives you an overview of all computer majors and you choose ome by the end of the semester or year. You are not behind in class requirements for whatever major you eventually decide on. So we are headed to accepted students day.
Computing exploration is a good program! My only comment is don’t judge web and mobile computing off of Web 1 (which computing exploration students take). WMC (web and mobile computing) gets way better after Web 1.
@Frobot we went to accepted students day yesterday and loved it!!!
@jd91200 we went on the 31st as well. My son loved it!
We went on the 31st as well. It is a great school, but accepting by major is a problem for my son. You see, when we left to visit schools, he was an electrical engineering major, but he came back a mechanical engineering major. Nearly 0% chance he would be able to switch at RIT, so he has taken it off his list.
Can you clarify? Your S was denied for CS but after you contacted your regional AC they offered him admission to a different major? Or was that an option presented with the denial?
@eandesmom it was after I contacted the advisor, I asked for some feedback on why he was denied (figured it couldn’t hurt) and they said they only had like 200 spots open for CS and a record number of qualified candidates. They then said that since my son was qualified, they did have openings in some of the other computer majors and if he was interested he could be accepted in that major. So he is doing Computer Exploration which is a 1 year program that allows you to take classes in several different majors in the computing school and after the 1st year you are guaranteed the major of your choice (not including video game design). We he could very well still wind up with the Computer Science major, however I love that he will be able to explore everything they have to offer, so you never know.
@jd91200 that’s amazing follow up and results. My S19 is likely to apply this next cycle, he’s not started his common app account yet but I am curious if the app allows for 1st and 2nd choice majors. He would likely pick CS first and software engineering second. I am concerned about the RIT price tag. S has a lower GPA (ugh), 3.3 UW, 33 ACT and very high rigor (will have 9.5 AP’s and 4 honors classes). Will not know on AP scores obviously until summer but expect a 5 on CS and maybe a 4 on Calc AB. Physics and AP Language are wild cards.
He is considering ED as it is “friendly” and we can pull out if $$ isn’t right, wondering how much that will help his odds. RIT doesn’t publish good data that I can find in this area which is frustrating.
I felt like a jerk asking when I emailed, but said who cares I’m asking because I was so surprised. Things happen for a reason I guess, as I think he’s better off in Computer Exploration than Computer Science. And I think if I remember correctly, you can put down your second and maybe third choice for majors. If it helps figure things out, he did not get any merit and applied RD. When we went to accepted students day they mentioned that this year’s applicants were overwhelming, I think they said they had over 22,000 applicants this year. I was reading one of your other posts, and I know you mentioned Drexel, my son did get in at Drexel with a merit scholarship.
My D did not get in Electrical Engineering with Robotics option. She sent all application materials at the beginning of February. It was a little late.
Her Stats are: SAT 1400(720M, 680E), SAT2 Math1 740, HS GPA is low 3.2 or 3.3 (UW).
But, she took a lot of real college courses, and will receive her AA degree next month. She is still 18 years old.
She was offered an “alternate” program with some possible programs/majors she could get in instead.
She did nothing initially with the offer. However, the chair of a program sent us an email to invite her to the program.
Eventually, she “re-applied” the program. She was admitted with a merit scholarship.
@eandesmom you are able to pick up to 3 majors. If it helps any, my Son got in for Fall 2018 with a 1390 Sat & 3.4 UN and got 7k in merit. However he is going into the Computer Engineering program
Thanks all! His HS has sent in a nomination for him for the Computing Medal scholarship (and copied us on RIT’s reply so we know it’s in lol) so in theory if admitted, he should get that at a minimum (7k). We shall see, 7 really isn’t going to be enough.
A classmate was admitted for 2018 with an identical GPA to his, lower test scores but I am not sure of the major. This is helpful though as I can ensure he selects back up majors.
He does plan to apply EA to Drexel as well and has some other options but at the moment RIT is very very high on his list.
@jd91200 I think it’s great you emailed, you never know! I helped my S17 appeal 3 of his financial offers last year and he did get a tad more out of 2 of the 3. Of course not the school he chose but still, it was worthwhile.
I saw a post on reddit by someone (supposedly) in the RIT admissions office that for the CS major they had 2400 applicants for 200 slots, with 100 candidates placed on the wait list. Any CS major thinking RIT would be their safety school is likely disappointed around now.
You may well be better off with another major in the computing school.
Pure CS is mostly theory and other options may well better prepare for internships and beyond.
@jrm815 If it was FrankAtRIT he really is in the admissions office!
