Oh, and it stinks that they sent rejections in a big envelope. Talk about misleading!

Hayze and Knight03, I am so sorry for your news..........I think it'll be tough for all of us 50 percenters.......a question I have for both of you is: Did both of you tour the campus through Penn State admissions? In other words, did they know if you actually visited the campus, rather than just apply???

I actually did a tour through Penn State Admissions and to be quite frank I doubt that played a factor what so ever. Reason being they don't ask whether or not you visited on the application. For example a school like Syracuse asks if you visited the campus and attended a variety of other events. Penn does not believe in a holistic applicant evaluation. They care about two things: GPA and SAT. In my personal opinion they are looking to move up a few ranking spots on the US News World Report rather than recruit those who demonstrate extracurricular involvement.

I agree with Knight's comment.

UVM (University of Vermont) is most expensive OOS that I've seen -- $38,216 -- ouch!!

S still waiting to hear from UP -- he applied 9/10 so the waiting is much longer than anticipated. Getting a little discouraged now after reading all these posts -- he has 3.4GPA (all Honors/3APs) and SATs of 1300/1600 - 1850/2400.

Oh well, just keep waiting for the mail -- unfortunately, it doesn't seem that receiving a big envelope is an indication of acceptance -- that's so mean!

no they know if you visited or not. in the spend a summer day program they gave us these little pieces of paper that you had to hand in when you visited a certain program seminar that they scanned as proof that you went. i'm not sure if it could play a factor if you're borderline or not, but they know if you have made an official visit or not.

Great, I visit my sister at Penn State ALL the time. I have never had an "official" visit with the whole campus tour or anything like that. Darn!

i dont think it counts for anything. it might help if youre borderline. but extremely minimally, if at all. don't even worry about it

Isn't UMich-Ann Arbor more expensive than all of those already posted for OOS? I think total cost is in the upper $40,000.....

Penn State is facing the "Rutgers syndrome" this year......top football, increased apps...sorry to those of you who were set on it, but there are many, many publics out there that can give you a very similar experience.....

that sucks about the envelope but it's all GPA and SAT/ACT...

yeah they're gonna have to cut a lot a lot of decently qualified applicants this year because of the massive amount of applications they've received. it sucks. thats why i thought having your app in early would help immensly. because they're rolling admissions. but i still havent heard...and i probably wont until january. if i am rejected, applying early will have been for nothing i guess

wait sorry if it was answered, i dont feel like reading everything, hayze what was your major?

I think Hayze was Speech Pathology or something like that. College of Health and Human Dev

is that hard college to get into? pretty competetive

anymore denials today, i always have my mom text me if we get something in the mail from psu, while im at school, cause if i get something now im probably a border student so i wont be accepted, therefore i wont come home haha

i got denied to UP...i got in to Altoona though...if you wanna know my stats look at the "Summer Session" thread

My daughter got denied to Up today too, accepted at Berks which she is not even going to consider I dont think...knew it was a longshot for UP anyway especially this year.. she has a 3.4 GPA and 1560/2400 SAT (Her SAT's are prob what did her in..maybe her GPA too for all I know..oh well..) Oh and she is in state (not that it matters)

wow im still in it, this is scary each day is gonna stress me out

i feel like i shudnt have applied, i got in but i doubt im gonna end up there, cud have helped u guys more than me

Yeah, it would have been a bit of a reach for her. PSU likes to try to cut down work on all the thousands of applications they go through by looking at GPAs and SATs.
They think somewhat along the lines of this bubble chart to do some quick sorting: http://admissions.psu.edu/info/counselors/bubble_chart06.pdf

Of course, they do look at the borderline candidates a bit more, and place them accordingly.
