MomfromPA, I'm sorry to hear about your daughter. I'm a mom from VA and my son is still waiting. Do you mind sharing what college your daughter applied to?

My GPA is a 3.72 and SATs are similar to momfromPa's daughters. suprised i havent heard yet, or do you think im more likely going to get in because of my GPA and my major is education(undecided)?

choir mom you mean what college at UP? She applied to liberal arts I believe...She isnt upset about it honestly..She got into schools so far so she just doesnt care..she wasnt that into Penn State anyway..In the end if you go to a branch campus most likely you have to transfer to UP..You graduate from the same school as those who start freshman year there so I personally dont see it as that big of a deal..CollegeKid good luck to you...I think you have a great GPA..I know they say the SAT only is 1/3 but your scores like my D's are just not good...She had honors/ap/dual credit courses etc and even a 3.4 wasnt good enough ...so I hope you wont be too disappointed if you dont get in..good luck tho again, and i hope you make it in bc you want it so bad...

I have had 9 honors classes and 1 AP class over my years, and although my SATs arent good, everything else is very good.(EC's, volunteer, work experience) so hopefully they will equal out my SAT

but thank you i really want it

MomfromPA, thanks for your reply. It's helpful to know that someone who applied to the College of Liberal Arts has received any kind of reply. That's the college my son applied to way back in August. Good luck to your daughter!

ar31791, for this website, do they use weighted GPAs?
http://admissions.psu.edu/info/couns...le_chart06.pdf

SingingLover11, this is what the first page of the bubble-chart link says: "To use the graph, plot the students cumulative high school grade point average and best combined SAT score from a single test date. The scale used is based on a 4.0 grading system that takes into consideration weighted grades."

Also, "This graph represents the academic credentials of students offered first-year, baccalaureate admission for fall 2008. Every admission year is different in terms of the number of students who apply and the credentials they present. Therefore, the graph should not be viewed as representing absolute cut off or minimum requirements for any campus. Admission decisions are based on both an academic evaluation and individual considerations. Professional judgment is used in evaluating individual considerations that might include, for example, the personal statement and activities list, special talent, audition, or portfolio review."

To read more, look at the first page of the link. Hope this helps.

PSU looks at the weighted GPA, not unweighted, i'm pretty sure. luckily, my school doesn't do the whole unweighted GPA thing. so even if for some reason they do look at UW, they won't see mine haha. because im sure they dont have enough time to calculate everyones UW GPA's.

i'm so nervous. like collegekid, i really want this but my GPA is only a 3.52. my SAT's are alright.. 1760 combined. but from one sitting it's only a 1720. which isnt good for PSU. i applied summer DUS but i just dont think i have a shot at this point

i think you have a better shot than me, your SATs are really good and even though i have heard of students who got in with lower grades than mine last year, idk if that will cut it this year

yeah this year has the largest applicant pool and it's extremely competetive. ugh it's so annoying. how many spots do they have have open for summer do you know? like how does that even work...considering they offer it to the people who checked off that they'd like to be considered for summer if they don't make it to fall. there have to be a ton of people who checked it off but won't wanna do it. so how do they fill those spots?

Does PSU look at strictly SATs and not ACT? B/c I’m waiting to hear back and I’ve gotten discouraged b/c my GPA is a 3.5 and SAT is 1760/2400, but my ACT is a 28, which is better than my SAT.

agehr91, PSU takes the highest scores available in the system. It all gets converted to SAT standards anyway, but if you sent both, they will take the higher of the two. Good luck!

I found this site because I have a friend looking for this year’s PSU post and wanted to forward it on. Don’t lose hope if you haven’t heard yet. My d is a freshman at UP and didn’t hear last year until Jan. 28! She got accepted for summer session with a very good GPA and class rank but very average (or below) SAT’s. Her weighted GPA was 5.99, UW it equated to something like a 3.8. She was in the top 10% of her class unweighted but weighted around 17% of the class (she had very few honors classes so kids that had more of them zoomed ahead of her). She is in state. SAT’s were 1030 for Math and Reading for one sitting and around 1500 for all three. So don’t lose hope! We were surprised when she got her acceptance and because it was so late she had all but given up. It was a pleasant surprise. She is doing very well academically but she is working her butt off. Good luck to all.

…could someone explain to me how on earth one gets a GPA of 5.99? What kind of scale is that out of?

It’s a confusing system but it’s based on a 7 point scale. So it sounds impressive but isn’t as impressive as it sounds. Like I said it’s basically a 3.799 on a 4 point scale.
