I'm at a community college right now and I'm hopefully transferring to UCI in Fall 2011. I was planning on taking my Dental School pre-reqs at the CC, but I learned that they don't like it (it makes you much less competitive). I was planning on taking courses at UCI over the summer, but I don't know how these classes translate.

I hope this isn't broad, but does anyone know the corresponding courses? You don't need to list out every single one for me, just the ones you know or have time for. Thanks so much!

General Biology w/ lab 1 year (4 units)

Bio 181 Cell/Molecular Biology (w/ Lab)
Bio 185 Diversity of Organisms (w/ Lab)

General Chemistry w/lab 1 year (5 units)

Chem 180- General Chem (w/ Lab)
Chem 185- General Chem (w/ Lab)

UCI is on the quarter system so a year is ~3 courses worth… plus/minus 1… I’ll explain.

Any 3 biology classes and any labs should work.
Examples:
Bio 97 Genetics (4 units)
Bio 99 Molecular Biology (4 units)
Any Bio D,E,N,or M 103-190 (I believe the letters stand for D=developmental, E=Ecology, N=Neurobiology, M=Molecular) (~4 units)

Since you’re a transfer and I don’t know what you’re majoring in, I would not recommend taking bio 93 or 94 to complete this requirement unless you’re biological sciences and it requires you to

Bio 100LW Intro Bio Lab (this class is being canceled though) so any labs Bio 103-190L (3-4 units)

Gen Chem
Chem 1A (4 units)
Chem 1B (4 units)
Chem 1C (4 units)
Chem 1LB (2 units) (Chem 1LA for pre-health not required)
Chem 1LC (2 units)

Organic Chemistry
Chem 51A (4 units)
Chem 51B (4 units)
Chem 51C (4 units)
Chem 51LA (2 units)
Chem 51LB (2 units) (Chem 51LC is only required for pre-pharms)

Biochemistry…
Bio 98 (4 units)…
Go ahead and show me a school that requires 2 quarters of this and I’ll give you another biochem class. That’s rediculous.

General Physics w/lab
Phys 3A (4 units)
Phys 3B (4 units)
Phys 3C (4 units)
Phys 3LB (1.5 units)
Phys 3LC (1.5 units) (I don’t think a physics 3LA even exists, don’t think health schools care about that either)

If I said something wrong… well… I’m not your counselor.

Hey PoorCookie, maybe I didn’t read the site enough. I thought it was strictly for CC courses, my bad, and thanks for the reinforcement!

Zairair, thanks for the specifics! “If I said something wrong… well… I’m not your counselor.” HAHA, we think alike! Don’t worry, I appreciate your post… and if you’re wrong… well… shucks :P

Zairair, I’m just going off Loma Linda’s requirements for Dental Pre-Reqs. They match UCLA.

Loma Linda University Dentistry, DDS

Prerequisites
Science courses must be completed within 5 years of beginning dental school.
Courses must be a C or higher to meet LLUSD requirements.

General Biology w/ lab – 1 year

General Chemistry w/lab – 1 year

Organic Chemistry w/lab – 1 year

Biochemistry - 1 semester or 2 quarters

General Physics w/lab – 1 year

English Composition – 1 year (done)

Well in that case there’s Bio M114 which is advanced biochemistry… I knew it existed, I just didn’t know off the top of my head what number it was so I had to go look for it.

Dang… advanced? Well, I’ll need to do some double checks because like you said, well, that sounds ridiculous! Hahaha, sounds good! Time to look up some UCI summer courses.

Those pre-reqs are perfect. I would take human anatomy while you are if you have time. Take biochemistry at UCI. Some schools require biochemistry at the 4 year (UCSF does).

Take Bio for sure at OCC. Because it has 1 year lab included… At uci the lab require you to take upper division classes to take them. So finish bio for sure.

Thanks iTransfer for the Bio advice! Really appreciate it!

The classes I listed were the classes I was going to take at OCC, but Dental School’s prefer the pre-reqs done at a university. I’m more concerned about the UCI pre-reqs in relation (or correspondence) to OCC, like Zairair and I were talking about.

Like say you want to take Physiology Lab as one of your bio labs, you’d have to also have another bio course, Bio E109 physiology completed (an upper division course). Some of them don’t though, such as molecular biology lab which only requires Bio 99 molecular biology (a lower division course) I believe.

Are you going to be a bio major? It helps since there’s a ton of overlap between pre-health reqs and the bio major. (Bio majors require 1 year physics, 1 year ochem, 1 year gen chem, and a number of upper division bio courses that could potentially fulfill any bio requirement)

Oh shoot, let me clarify. I’m actually a Social Ecology (Psychology & Social Behavior) major. However, I want to go to Dental School so I’m just clearing the pre-reqs at UCI.

I know it’s easier to be a Bio major because you clear the pre-reqs much more easily, but I like Social Ecology, and plus, Dental Schools like a bit of variety since 90% of applicants are Bio majors anyways :P
