Dentist and Dental hygiene questions...Help!!!

Hello...
I am at my first year of college right now, and my major is microbiology. I am planning to become a dentist. Since dental school is so hard to get into, I planned a back-up plan. I plan to get a Dental Hygiene license after my second year of college, and the license would take me 2 years to finish. After I got my license, I will continue to study microbiology for two years, and also, start working as a dental hygienist. After I finish my pre-med/pre-dent or microbiology, I will apply to dental school. If I got into the dental school, I will start studying in dental school. If I do not get into dental school, I would still have a dental hygiene job.
Also, does a dental hygiene license would makes my resume look good to the dental school?
I also can earn money for the dental school while working as a dental hygienist.

Does this plan sound reasonable? If it does not sounds reasonable, why?

Thank you very much

I think if you want dental school you should go all out in that direction first. You can always go back later and pick up the hygienist credentials later.

Also don't underestimate the amount of time you'll be studying during dental school. Yes, there's free time, but not enough to hold down a meaningful job. It's a rigorous course of study that rivals medical school.

I have no idea if a hygiene license is of benefit to an application. I also don't know if there is a shortage or not of hygienists. If there is, then you'll likely make it more difficult to get in, as dental schools may be reluctant to take a trained hygienist out of the field. This is the problem nurses have in getting into medical school. No school (med or dent or whatever) wants to further exacerbate a problem if they can avoid it.
