Dentistry: Tufts or Georgetown

Tufts has this seven year program where one applies for the dental school end of freshman year... Its dental school is also top notch. Georgetown has a better medical school than tufts', but doesn't have a dental school.

I know georgetown is the more prestigious of the two, but what do you guys think?

well...why are you looking at their grad schools in choosing between their undergrad colleges?

It's a no brainer - Tufts.

patlees88, I'm looking at their grad schools because tufts has 7 year program with their dental school while georgetown doesn't have a dental school... so if I go to georgetown, I would have the added stress of DAT and applications, whereas I won't at Tufts (if I get into this 7 year program though)

Why Georgetown is even considered here? Tufts is well known for dentistry. The question is are you sure you want to be a dentist? If the answer is not sure then Georgetown might be a consideration. Otherwise Tufts is where you want to go.

Depends on how hard it is to get into that 7-year program.

in that case, I would take a close look at how applicants from Tufts do in getting into that dental program. You should call them and ask for some data, if available. if reasonable amount of students with reasonable stats get into that program, Tufts should be your clear choice.

well I know that last year the 3 students than applied for that program all got in, and I know one of them... He only had a 3.57 gpa in high school (not sure about college)

I would go with Tufts

I feel kind of bad turning down Georgetown for tufts because georgetown is so much more well known and prestigious than tufts (maybe in some part due to athletics)

Think of it this way, if you go to Georgetown and you don't like the place, does the ranking matter? I think you give too much into Georgetown ranking and this will not be good for you when you start Tufts. It's all about fit and in your case based on your description, Tufts fits you very well. Please let go of the ranking.

And also Georgetown has a much higher revealed preference...

milkman, you should go to the school that fits your academic needs. If you are sure that dentistry is the path you will follow, you should go to Tufts. Also, you won't be the only one in this kinda situation. My best friend's older brother turned down Harvard 3 yrs ago to go to a no-name state school's 7 yr medical program...

Have you looked at the University of Connecticut? You'll get a fine undergraduate education there, it will likely cost you far less than Georgetown or Tufts, and UConn has one of the best, if not the best, dental schools in the country with a program that is similar to the one that you describe.

Tufts, hands down.
