has anyone got denied after asking for letter of rec? I'm feeling a little nervous now because I emailed a professor a week ago and still haven't gotten a reply. I've had several classes with her (got A and A-'s) as well as working on a project with her outside of class, so I'm little taken aback for not getting a response...yet. When and how should I follow up with her, in a way that is polite and not pushy? (I graduated so I'm not in Berkeley to see her in person.) Is the lack of response typically means a no-no ?

Hmm. Could you try calling? I’m guessing a week is a standard enough wait time. (During my college interviews, the notification emails always said to wait one week after contact before contacting the college to get another interviewer.)

Also, if you felt okay with asking a prof for a rec, it probably means s/he’s nice/respectful enough to NOT leave you hanging. The prof is probably just busy.

A friend of mine got denied. She asked the professor one day after class, he said he’d think about it and tell her tomorrow. The next day, he comes up to her right before class and says that he could not in good conscience write her a letter of recommendation. OUCH. Don’t know the circumstances, but that’s her business.

I waited a month to get a response from one of my professors before he agreed. He was teaching at an out-of-country uni at the time. Your professor might be busy preparing for the upcoming semester. Don’t freak out yet.

Is the professor teaching this fall? You should probably find out. That may be one reason. She may be taking a vacation before school starts. That’s another reason. She may be prepping for a class. That’s a third reason. There’s a ton of reasons why they don’t check their email for weeks at a time. Don’t worry!

yeah when I emailed her I got an automatic reply saying she’s on vacation and will be back the next day (so it’s been a week since she’s back). I guess I’ll wait another week, if not two…since she’s the most popular instructor in the whole department, and one of the busiest…ergghh, I’m just afraid she’s inundated with requests for recs + other stuff that’ll make her too busy. It’s hard to find someone to write rec ya know?

Good idea, give it a week and write again. If she’s been away she’ll have a ton of emails, one of my professors told me he got roughly 200 emails a day!
