Hi! I was recently accepted to Pitt, and I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight into the Department of Mathematics. Are the professors good? Are the programs strong? Any personal stories about experiences with math at Pitt? Anything would help, thanks a lot!
No direct experience. My son is a freshman this year. Towards the end of his first term, he briefly considered switching to math as his major (he is an engineering major.)
He was able to talk to an advisor who provided him with a lot of detailed info- how his credits would transfer (he took a lot of college math in high school) and what sort of research was being conducted. He put him in touch with 3 or 4 professors on various interesting research topics. So they seem to encourage even freshman research opportunities.
Ultimately my son decided to stay in engineering and get a minor in math.
I’d say contact the department head!
I had the same questions about Pitt’s English Writing program, and emailed the department head asking to speak to a professor or current student. I was connected with a current senior who answered any and all questions I had, so definitely reach out! It was a really helpful experience.
