Hello all,

I currently have two internship offers from the Department of State: one is at a small embassy abroad, and the other is in DC.

I know that these are good internships, although not "prestigious" per se.
However, I was wondering if one is known to be a better offer than the other.

Unfortunately, I do not know anybody personally who has done an internship either in DC or abroad with the govt.
Any advice on which is a better opportunity and why is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

DC probably gives you a better opportunity to network.

Abroad gives you the chance to live in another country and perhaps travel around to other nearby places.

You might get to do more at the embassy if it is small, b/c you will be a larger percentage of their workforce vs. DC where there are tons of people (but I can’t guarantee that). Abroad also might be a “once in a lifetime” opportunity, depending on your career plans.

I got a State internship offer (for DC) in grad school, but ended up turning it down for a paid internship that would lead directly to a job… so unfortunately I can’t offer too much insight, other than being familiar with the programs some.
