If a new freshman student applicant is accepted for CSE does that mean she is automatically in the program? Or will she later need to apply to be admitted into the department after establishing a track record at UMN? Some schools require students to apply to the department after 2 years of study at that school.
I think I found the answer to my question. At UMN it looks like freshmen are admitted to the program but have to apply to their major after some history at UMN. From these stats it looks like 90% of CSE are admitted to their major so that’s a relief

Yes the student must apply usually 1st semester sophomore year. For more competitive programs w/in CSE, some students may not get into their chosen major (eg ChemE - https://www.cems.umn.edu/undergrad/admissions). It’s good for a student to talk to advisers frequently to make sure he/she is on track for major or even discover that a different major may be a better fit. My son is a current sophomore at CSE and it seems like he and his friends have been changing minds on majors for the past 3 semesters! I think my son ended up applying to 2 majors but wants to also do work in a 3rd area. Sort of funny b/c I had thought his major was so clear going in (math). For some majors, it seems like if you don’t have a lot of credits coming in (distribution requirement type), there is not a lot of wiggle room for much mind changing since CSE has 3 sems of physics, math reqs, and various UMN reqs on top of major reqs. So they have to start thinking about things so early!
@MomMe32 Many thanks for the additional information. It’s helpful too.
