Anyone know when departmental scholarships will be released?

I didn’t know there were any for incoming students, lucia.

My daughter was notified about a departmental scholarship several weeks ago – she received a call from departmental chair ( i think) telling her about the scholarship and advising it would be detailed in a follow up letter

would that have been in music, srodier?

I found out at the admitted students yesterday that engineering scholarships will be given out before April 15th

I called the Business school and was told they do not have any departmental scholarships fo freshman, but that they offer a very large number for Juniors and Seniors.

so did any of this year’s accepted students get a departmental scholarship?

@jkeil911 I know people (engineering) who did

Thanks, jibler. I’m speculating that engineering and maybe music are the only two schools to offer freshmen departmental scholarships. But maybe there are more. Anyone?

we called admissions early this week to see if any merit money would be made available as some accepted students declined and went elsewhere. No go. The answer is simply “it’s very competitive, and there are no appeals”. I had even told them I wasn’t “appealing” not disagreeing, just wondering if money became available. So they’re playing it totally by the book, and then they say, “check with your department for scholarships”. Which I think is the ultimate blow-off. Look, if you didn’t get any merit money from admissions process…your dept. sure as heck isn’t going to give a freshman any money who fell below the general scholly threshold. So while we’re still very pleased about the acceptance to UMd, and the quality of the academic dept, and the overall University situation…they just don’t give out much merit money, and there’s zero flexibility.

On the bright side, there are a plethora of departmental scholarships that you can apply for AFTER you matriculate…doesn’t help freshman year, but I think they want to see students “prove” themselves academically in college…

Friend’s son just found out he got a 5k merit scholarship from Clark Engineering School. He did not receive any merit aid from UMD Admissions. (bk, pres, dean)
